You could do this, but I wouldn't. I think using a converter is the best idea. They are cheap and you can get very small units for allmost any application.. I found one on mpja.com that I was thinking of getting.. May be too large for you, but not sure what a distributer and coil will draw...

First Congrads on you new truck.. I like the cage. Camp Legeune let the guy I hired go in and check it out before I paid. May be differnt where you are, but they are usually OK to deal with from what I hear. Hope this helps..
