I'm still searching for my first MV. I had originally been looking at the 5 tons, but I'm thinking they might be too big for my needs, an occasional fun rig for weekend cruises, parades, etc. I'm still considering them though.
I did run into what looks like a decent LMTV 1078 that's about 4...
Looking at a 5 ton on one of the auction sites and it looks really good except that it's missing the battery cables. Description says it runs when jump started. How big of a job would it be to install new battery cables before I drive the truck home...provided I win the auction that is.
Can anyone give me their initial impressions of this truck? It's reasonably close for me to go look at.

I guess I would have to find one with the super singles and measure it. Cutting the stack and removing the spare and crane would be easy, but I would just want to make sure that was all that needed to be done.
After doing more research, I forgot about my HOA. If an M931 won't fit in my shop door, I'm pretty sure I'll be force to go with a deuce.
I might be able to park an M931 on the side of my shop where it wouldn't be seen, but then it would be sitting outside in the elements every day and I don't...
That's sharp. What are the benefits of keeping it in 6×6 form? I have no plans of taking the truck off roading or through mud. More like a weekend cruiser and backup bugout rig.
I'm tracking with you now. The 931/932 trucks are actually "tractors" and have a shorter frame already. So dropping one of the axles and remounting the remaining axle would give a "bobbed" look without actually cutting the frame since the 931/2 is already a shorter frame?
After a quick Craigslist search of places within about 5 hours of my location, I saw plenty of ads for 5 tons, some of them pretty good looking tractors for around $7k to $8k, but I only saw one ad for a deuce. It was in pretty rough shape also. Is there a reason that the 5 tons are easier to...
That's very generous of you. I actually just live outside of Cape. However, I don't know who carnac is, or Clinto, or what the truck looks like, and I think the biggest problem is I don't have $12k. :( I greatly appreciate your offer and might be getting in touch is I can save up the additional...
I can do preventative maintenance like oil changes without issue. I also have a good deal of heavy truck driving experience. I just am not knowledgeable on engine repairs, diagnosing, etc.
I really need a road-ready machine as I have very little mechanical experience and don't know of anyone in my area that works on these machines. But I will check out your lead.
