Photos of the mounting of the box on the chassis, with help from the guys in the MVCC. The truck will be a tribute truck for the Grim Reaper from the 4th ID, which is currently stationed here in Colorado at Ft Carson. See pix 149 on page 41 of Lyles book"Gun Trucks in Vietnam" of the original.
Two days ago we put the gun box on the chassis of my deuce. We lifted it up with a wrecker on each end, then backed the truck under it. It lined up pretty well and only required a slight adjustment and the mounting bolts literally dropped straight in. From start to finish it only took about...
Yesterday I fabricated my M2 post mount from 2-1/2" dia pipe. The gun is on order. The gun box is complete on the bed, painted semi gloss black and the "Grim Reaper" name (from 4th ID, 4th /S&T, B15) is done in white, both sides, in the same script style as the original truck. The exhaust...
Since my last post I've made progress on the my gun truck. The cab and chassis are painted in semigloss black as is the outside of the gun box with its steel pate. I wet sanded the first coat and then shot a second coat, which greatly improved the look of the truck. The grill, headlights, etc...
Since my last post, I completed welding all the steel into the bed, including a door in the rear, similar to the old halftracks. Beats climbing over the sides. Have not done the door or windshield armor yet. Last Sunday, with assistance of fellow members of the Military Vehicle Collectors of...
It was about $1 per pound which included cutting all the panels (2 12'x4' sides, 4 2'-6"x4' ends, 1 2'x4' rear door, 1 windshield, 2 3'x4' cab doors), delivered to a local shop. I picked it up with my trailer. I also purchased some angle iron to make the corners and clips to attach to the bed...
I just finished welding up all the plate for my deuce gun truck. I used 3/16" plate and had all the pieces cut per my dimensions at the steel supplier (approx 1400 lbs). It is a full length inside mount (12' x 7') box with a space in front for access to the cab and a door in the back, similar...
The Lyles book "Gun Trucks in Vietnam" lists five different trucks all named Grim Reaper. One is already in the list on this thread. Where is it and what unit was it part of?
After further research, I found out that the truck Celestial Death later went by the name Grim Reaper, still with the 4ID, 4S&T. I found a picture of it on a youtube video named 2 1/2 and 5 ton gun trucks of the Vietnam War (at 6:33). This picture shows a partial hood number of 04E7xxxx and a...
Since I made my first post I've done more research and bought additional books about the GTs. The new Doyle book has great photos of "Eve of Destruction" and details of door and windshield armor, etc. Very useful. I'm waiting to get my plate fabed by a local steel shop and then start welding...
Does anyone have any information about the M35 based GT "Celestial Death", assigned to the 4th ID, 4th S&T group? There is a picture of it on page 35 of the book "Gun Trucks of Vietnam".
After further research I found out that Celestial Death went by two other names; first it was Pink...
I got my copy of "Gun Trucks" today and I am quite pleased. The pictures are sharp and I was able to figure out how the armor plate was applied to the doors and windshield. That was a something I couldn't figure out from my other books. Kudos to Mr Doyle for a quality book!
David, I bought your Dodge books a few months ago (I have a WC52 and a M37) and thoroughly enjoyed them. I ordered your Gun Truck book two days ago and if it is half as good as the Dodge books it will be great. I look forward to reading it. During your research, did you come across a M35 truck...
My truck has the gas cans mounted on the rider side running board. The front compartment has a steel cover on the front half and uses the same bolt holes shown in the picture. There are no other holes in the lid. My wood seats are not original so what you say about the lids being attached to...
Interesting. My truck has a steel half cover on the front of the compartment but nothing on the rear compartment. It looks original since there are factory holes in the lip of the compartment with four hold down bolts. You can see the holes in the posted picture. Also, my truck has seats that...
I just acquired a 1942 Dodge WC52 and noticed that the four compartments under the troop seats are open. Are these supposed to have some sort of cover (wood or metal) to keep out rain, dirt, trash, etc.? I can find no pictures or info in the TMs I have.
