Bringing diesel generators back into service?

Bringing diesel generators back into service? I readily admit to not being a diesel mechanic, so pointers will be much appreciated. It seems it is falling to me to bring several Gen-Sets back into service after hibernation. Unfortunately they were not put away properly, I think most were...

    New summer project! "Rosie"

Hmm, rumor is that there are only about twenty 101's in the U.S and maybe a dozen in Canada. Fellow I got mine from had three, I think I saw a post here of someone else with three. I know of one in WA and another in TX, there may be another in Las Vegas. I'm wondring how many of them are members...

Gen Set, TM 5-5260, Stock No. 6115-376-7003 from 1953.

Removed the lower access panel and the end-cap from the generator. According to a local guy who looked at it yesterday it has an alternator to power the field. Despite having used compressed air to blow out dust there was still a lot of dirt inside the cover. So I will be removing more covers to...

Well, I've searched very carefully and am still unable to find a Manual Field Flash button anywhere. I did confirm that there are several small capacitors used in the system. Correct oil filter is to arrive in the morning, once I finish the oil change and clamp the fuel tank back in place I...

Four hours, too long! I really do appreciate the pointers.

Took a pic of the schematic and blew it up on my screen. Looks like there may be some capacitors called out on the upper left? If so I expect they are very, very, dead from inactivity and heat/cold for several years. Click the thumbnail for a larger image. I may be able to PM or email a much...

My Rover 101 FC ex-RAF missile carrier.

Did not find a Tire thread. Anyone tried these superlug-900-16-10in-rgb.jpg Seems they would have to be better than Bar-Grips. Not any less expensive though. The only other 35/10-16 I can find are these, https://www.intercotire.com/tire/148 Probably even more expensive. Manual steering so...

My Rover 101 FC ex-RAF missile carrier.

There are several Mil. vehicles in my small town, population around 3500. I know we have three Unimogs, two Pinzgaur, at least one M38, two Five-ton, and an assortment of modified ex-Mil. Jeeps. My Rover 101 is unique and the most driven of all. Most just sit, although one of the Pinz sees...

I will try to get a better pic of the schematic. I have not found it particularly helpful as I am unfamiliar with the symbols/devices and their functions. Set owner has alienated the local electricians as he cheaps out on them too often, a wealthy miser. Now he wants to get ALL of his many Gen...

    "Ran when parked" thread.

Out here there is very little traffic in the hills. Even the kids on quads/UTV's mostly play within sight of the paved roads or go out in groups. I was mostly referring to recovery, even my Rover 1-Ton with Nokken PTO winch might not be able to right a 5-Ton. I also know the local tow service...

Gen Set, TM 5-5260, Stock No. 6115-376-7003 from 1953.

I've got nothing showing on the meters, or at the 110v receptacles. Cannot light a 110v bulb. There are several switches that I am unsure of their purpose. One is Manual - Automatic, I expect it to be for voltage regulation? Tried switching it but never saw that it made any difference. The owner...

Gen Set, TM 5-5260, Stock No. 6115-376-7003 from 1953.

Got the fuel pump back on and no longer leaking. Cannot readily take just the top off the cabinet as the screws are just as rusted and much harder to reach. The real fix would be to chisel or grind the heads off the lower screws and replace the caged nuts. Owner only cares about today, proper...

Is the one just outside Beatty still there? Guy had a lot of derelict civilian trucks too, so it does not stand out.

    "Ran when parked" thread.

OK, so I guess I should put my Rover 101-FC in here, In "The barn" the day I rescued it from Kalifornia. Very low kilometers on it. Did have to rebuild the brakes and replace a stuck clutch. Sorry to have posted this thread to the wrong topic, maybe a Mod. can move it to conversations?

    "Ran when parked" thread.

Nevada desert, very low humidity. We get very little snow here and it usually evaporates before it has a chance to melt into running water. But the UV is murder on upholstery and tires.

Is it STILL sitting there? Used to be a '59 El Camino in the same yard. I worked on tracking down the owner but someone else got the El Camino first. No longer have the contact info, got it from the county recorder using the address as I recall. I have seen two more in other parts of Nevada...

    "Ran when parked" thread.

OOPS! I know almost nothing of U.S. military vehicles despite having several friends who own a variety of them. I frankly cannot imagine playing with something so very large and heavy out in our rough desert hills, who the heck could rescue you if you messed up? Perhaps a Mod can move this to...

    "Ran when parked" thread.

"Ran when parked". Post up your desert, forest, farm field, bomb-range, and barn finds. Bonus points if you rescued the truck or found someone else to do so. ;) Here is one sitting "Up on the hill" where I work part-time. Ran When Parked, owners son says they used to drive it in the hills...

Gen Set, TM 5-5260, Stock No. 6115-376-7003 from 1953.

Needed a half-inch more space to remove the fuel tank for a proper repair. To do that the cabinet has to be removed. For THAT, the screws at the lower edge have to come out, which may have been simple about fifty years ago, prior to the rust! Owner insisted on doing a truly Okie repair to the...

My Rover 101 FC ex-RAF missile carrier.

Here is a pic some may find amusing. Local Cars and Coffee last fall. Another as a British Roadster. "Fume Hood" in place.
