I would also consider using heat. I bought a trailer and wanted to spin the pintle downward. Penetrating oil, pry bars, and hammers had almost no effect. We used a plumbers torch to heat the pintle and threads and it finally broke free.
My father-in-law and I went to French Camp, CA to pick up my new M1009 CUCV. We removed the drive shaft, pumped up the tires to 40psi, and towed it home with a "Blue Ox" tow bar. It pulled like a dream behind my Expedition.

I'm planning on using a tow bar to tow home my new purchase. Do you have to remove both drive shafts from an M1009 or can you just put the transfer case into neutral?

I buy these glides on Rockler http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=1580&site=ROCKLER and cut them to size for woodworking jigs. If cut thin enough, they could prevent the rivets from scratching the walls so badly. Beats grease, right?
Has anyone tried using polymer glides to keep hard top from binding?
i use them for table saw glides and think they might work to keep corners from binding.
