Check for leaking injector or return lines. I had the same issue on a 6.9L ford motor. I snugged up the injector lines on the pump and at the injectors and it cleared up.
You bring up a good point...I never thought about the field not having enough voltage. HHMMM, wonder if maybe my old one is still good, guess I will need to find a place to have it tested.

I got a used one from Taylor Trading Co. The truck is back running and charging again. I just thought I would get my old one rebuilt and keep is as a spare. If it could be rebuilt for a reasonable price. I can do it myself if I could find the parts.

Never heard of CME until you posted this link.
I have called a couple local shops and they said they would look at it, but from what I have read on SS the parts seem to be very expensive.....one vendor that offers a conversion kit told me that the regulator for the original...
Went out yesterday to start the truck and the batteries were dead. Jumped it off and found the voltage was low. Checked the voltage at the alternator and it was 23.82 volts with the truck running, didn't change with the truck off either. So I assume the alternator died.
It was working fine...
Yeah, I looked at the Newark site and they listed a store in the Atlanta area, I was just going to run by and pick it up.....but I called and they closed the Atlanta store. Oh well, it's on order now....
