Yes, that's a very nice installation. I may do something similar someday, rather than just have my 003A under a canopy next to the house. Your setup is inspiring.
About 1/3 of the way down this page, I have a couple photos of how I do it.http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?91430-How-have-you-civilized-your-MEP-Generators/page3
The meters are next to the entrance panel, and I can see the load on each side from inside the house.
The way I understand the original breaker, if the fluid were to leak out, it would trip very quickly, without the time delay feature. I'm betting that the ones that won't start big motors have something like that wrong with them. My 003A starts an industrial 5hp air compressor easily, while...
I understand, and certainly believe you. Within limits, a good battery can regulate charging voltage when the charge current is fairly low, like in this system. It's not ideal though, because if left running long enough, the voltage will creep up and you'll start losing electrolyte from the...
I've seen it with my 003A, but it's a capacitor charging kind of thing. One spark, and then if you disconnect and reconnect, you don't get another one. I don't know of anything that should be drawing a few mA continuously. I guess you could leave the meter connected and disconnect things...
If the rust is so fluffy that it blocks the air flow, you could scrape it out a bit. Mine is fairly rusty, but there's still plenty of open channel for air flow, and I don't see how I could ever load the thing to 100% steadily in backup service, so I haven't concerned myself. If it gets too...
#2 isn't ridiculously large. Every three numbers doubles current carrying capacity, so #2 is not even double #4, and is slightly more than double #6. I'd probably keep it and use it.
I kinda like a simple direct-drive starter, but if the gear reduction version really draws less current, it's hard to argue with that advantage. I suppose the monthly startup of my 003A will probably not wear out a starter in my lifetime, so I would use whichever one was available at the right...
The last couple posts are why I wrote a detailed set of instructions for operating our MEP-003A and transferring the house from commercial power to generator power, and had each person in the family practice it. Then I left a copy where everyone can find it. Sometimes the effort of learning to...
Tell me about it! I was looking for my dial indicator and spark plug hole adapter for about 6 months now and finally found it screwed into the head of a motorcycle engine in my shop. At least I hadn't bought a replacement yet.
I made some suggestions to 445gsdss and then suggested he post here because someone will likely think of something that I didn't. Just to let you know what I've already suggested, here is my reply:
Calvin,
High, uncontrollable voltage is a sign that something in the regulator circuit is not...
