Paul,
Congrats on the truck, and sorry for the headache. My advice is to start tracing wires you might have a short. I had all kinds of weird wiring issue with mine when I got it and that seems to be the norm. Get really familiar with the wiring diagrams....
Brad
Thanks super! That is exactly what is happening. I dont have a tach so I don't know exactly when it comes on but I am not over revving it. Maybe 2500 tops. Glad to know that I don't have a crazy gremlin either. Still need to pull the dash and check the diode. That is my last hope before a...
I have a spair that was freshly rebuilt that I am going to swap out, but I am still stumped how it started charging. I still dont have 12v with the key on at that alternator. I have been trying to figure out how to get it there so it will charge. I have traced is to the diode, but that is...
Can the alternators on or CUCV's self excite themselves if they are spun at a high RPM. I know this sounds weird, but let me explain what happened yesterday. I have been tracing down an issue with the exciter wire on Gen 2 over the past month so with no gen 2 light at start up. Yesterday I...
I think that I have good news, but still a question. I traced voltage all the way to and from the relay under the dash. From there I could not get to the Diode because I have not taken apart the dash. I am still stumped how or why it will not light up. If there is voltage to the relay should...
I have been rewiring my alternators from a previous owners debacle and now have the wiring corrected per the TM's. I was missing an isolated ground alternator so I got one from Old Mechanic and it test good. Now both alternators that tested good are installed in the truck. I turn the key on...
Optimas are so over rated. I had one in a scout several years ago and it gave me so much trouble it was not worth it. I switched to Odyssey batteries and love them. I have a pair of them in a boat I own that are from 2005 and they still work like a champ. Sears has rebadged them as their...
Just a little update. This weekend I dove in head first and fixed the previous owners debacle.
First, what I had to begin with was a non insulated grould alternator on the passenger side and an insulated ground on the drivers. The previous owner instead of installing the non insulated...
Nah, you would be fine. You really only want the front pulling anyways. I say go for it. I know I am from Texas, but I have driven in just about every kind of weather there is and snow with front wheel drive is totally doable.
Well, as my luck would have it, its a non isolated ground alternator. I am going to be really anal about this and add the right alternator. I am also going to redo the wires back to stock. I have already found where the wires were cut at the end of the wire loom near the block. I have...
Dang, then I might have a problem. Only one of my alternators has the second post/isolated ground. I will take some better pictures and post tonight. Thanks.
The glow plug system is my doing, and I used the part numbers found on this site to convert it to 12 volt. I also added some AC60G's too. No more ether to start it with. And thanks to you Doghead this weekend I did your mod. I have been checking off the list of things to do and checking the...
I was on the fence as to what to do, mostly because I am already knee deep in other projects on it, but the more I think about it I will likely put it back to stock. None of the Gen lights on the dash work like they are supposed too and I am not sure that the Gen 2 is even charging. I had 14.5...
I purchased my M1009 about 6 weeks ago and have been slowly going through it and fixing little odds and ends. All the while studying this site and the wiring diagrams. I realized this weekend when I started testing the charging system that my alternators are backwards. What I mean is the...
I actually saw that listing on Craigslist. I am north of you in Tyler and often search southern east Texas ads just for kicks. It looks like a nice rig. Congrats on the purchase.
Thanks. I have searched the web and have not found the Bestop anywhere, but there is a company making a similar top. I would love for Bestop to bring it back as the windows look better on theirs than the new tops. The newer ones have a smaller rectangular window that looks out of place. I am...
Thanks, the soft top was one of the reasons I bought it, and the 39.5" iroks helped too. Its a Bestop that is no longer available and are getting really hard to find. The cool part about the top is the sides roll up and keep the cargo covered. In Texas the August heat will go way over a 100...
