After the Canadian army sold off the m135's a bunch were used in New brunswick to haul pulp wood. The guys doing this were putting school bus motors and transmissions in them. Even with a single speed transfer they ran good.
Hi guys here are some pics from a local IH dealer where they try to sort out the varous issues with these trucks. Great looking but the mechanic told me to steer clear of them.
I commend you on your perseverance. I had a heck of a time getting my chev 350 to run right. I set the timing up and it would not start or run and than die. We finally figured it out as slack in the timing chain. Perhaps this is your problem.2cents

Have you considered changing the transfer case to a two speed. Boyce used to have the parts for this altough I have no idea as to cost or difficulty.

Here is a photo of a Canadian M43 with hitch installed. The second photo is of a M152 communication truck with a trailer. My experience, although not as vaste as many of you, is I have never seen a tactical military truck without a hitch.
The bedford was the truck of choice for tour companies doing overland expeditions in Africa in the 70's &80's . They were relable and fairly simple to fix if broken. Is it a lefty or a righty ? Better view off road, just don't hit anything too big!
