in case anyone is interested in their own 10tonner, there is an M123A1C for sale in Spokane, WA right now

so it has come to my knowledge that the US Forest Service contracts for privately owned trucks during the summer to carry water for crews fighting wildfires here in the west and what I am hoping to find out is if anyone here got their 5ton in this program as they would seem to me to be an...
I ended up driving my hydraulic pump directly from the transfercase using a pto from an M543 which is fulltime however I also installed an oil cooler in the hydraulic circuit at the return side before the filter and reservoir so I am not getting overheating of the fluid and without a pressure...
time to report in on the M543 delivered yesterday to me
I wish I could say I was pleasantly surprised with the truck but I must report that she is going to need more than I had been told by the seller (I know, always a big risk buying sight unseen)
here is the rundown on the good and not so...
I have heard about this problem with the Austin Western cranes...good to know mine is not one of those. I assume mine is a Garwood then? Any thoughts about the rotator pinion?
what the present owner tells me, it needs work to the rotator for the crane (sheared key?), the PTO shaft to the front winch is snapped, there is a problem with the air assist to the brakes, the batteries are weak and one of the front tires is not the correct wheel/tire. Of course, once I get...
closed the deal to buy a 1973 M543 from the east side of Washington State. Literally am buying it sight unseen except for photos here but am told the truck has a mere 826mi on it and is 100% running and operable with the exception of a few small issues. Delivery scheduled for Labor Day...
many thanks for the reply
any way to pressurize the oil galleries and circ L/O through the block before cranking it?
also, the engine has been in its container for the 20 years but the seal was broken at some point in the past so there is the potential that condensation occurred inside the...
so I have an NHC250 which came with paperwork indicating is was rebuilt by the Army in 1995 but been not run since. My question is what steps beyond the obvious are required to bring such a long dormant engine back to life? I have pulled covers and inspected the valve train...all looks good...
much appreciated here...I was wondering about those clutches but could find little on the internet about them. now I am educated and grateful
re the hyd pump from the trans pto...looking more like the option but also might have a member with that elusive accessory drive available and I am...
I guess I need to just pull the trigger and buy one to see how to make it work in the space I have...there is certainly room as far as I can see but may not be able to have the hydraulic pump inline with the pto shaft. May need to mount the pump lower and have a double belt or chain to drive it...
I was thinking the transmission pto output ratio?
any thoughts on converting a Garwood winch to hydraulic drive? Much as I think pto winches are cool, I like the idea of having the greater control of the winch that you get with hydraulics and I am turning my M54 into a workhorse rather than a...
bumping back up in the hope for some insight into my project. I need to come up with a solution this week to be able to move ahead to completion
can anyone tell me what a winch pto gear ration is? is it 1:1 of does it reduce output rpm?
let me add here that I have been told that it is possible a commercial PTO would work with my Spicer gearbox that would have the accessory output shaft...can anyone here give me any more insight into this or can my existing PTO be modified to include the second output shaft?
thanks in advance...
bring this one back to life as I have a few ideas I want to try out here
1. can the 20k# Garwood winch be converted from direct drive from the PTO to a hydraulic drive and if so what is the difficulty factor/drawbacks? if I go this route, I can use the PTO on the gearbox to drive my hydraulic...
maybe a longshot, but is it possible to have the PTO for the winch on my truck also output to the rear? I see a cylindrical portion at the bottom of it with a bolt on endcap and wondering if a second shaft is possible? If I could drive the hydraulic pump from that PTO it would solve all my...
From what Ron told me there is a declutchable PTO for the M819 wreckers which is what I would like to find but don't hold out much hope for one of those so if I intend to mount my pump immediately behind the transfer case on my M54, I need some form of a clutch which would allow me to disconnect...
my plan was to have a recirc valve back to the reservoir to use when hydraulics aren't required to be used. not sure how many HP I will lose when just driving but since the truck is not a truck I put any miles on anyway...
