Adjusting valve on a dodge flat head

wow, those are loose clearances!! I set mine per Charles Talbert's cold settings. Quiet, no tapping, and great power. But the military has their own reasons for specs. NV

    Anyone Know this M37?

I think one of the most important things to check when buying an old military (or other) vehicle is to do a compression check. Simple and quick. My own M37 started and drove well, and I was lucky to find one that had been often driven, and owned by the same person for a quarter century. A...

    1963 M37 - Pre-start checklist

I don't know for sure about the "lead" question for the valves. On the recommendations of others, can't recall whom, I ordered the RedLine lead substitute from Summit (or was it Jeg's), and did use it. The valve seats are of '40's standards, and may be more protected with "lead". I just had...

Adjusting valve on a dodge flat head

just be sure you have your valves at whatever position gives the maximum tappet clearance. When the piston is at TDC & about about to start its downward power stroke, its valves will be closed with maximum clearances. You need tappet wrenches to do this. NV

Adjusting valve on a dodge flat head

and if you set them cold per above, with the engine on a stand, without all the manifolds and such, it is much easier. I just checked mine over and over, and now have no ticks or other noise. NAM VET

    Pre-oiling the Dodge 230 engine?

I just completed a rebuild of my 230 engine. I thought long and hard about finding a way to pre-oil my motor, and there is no easy way to do so. What I did finally was to pull up about a half quart of oil my metal suction device, one of those things used to suck and fill a differential or...

New guy..as of today..with questions about the M37 and engine swaps

Perhaps before you toss the stock motor and fuss with the modifications to make some other powerplant work, it might be worth your while to at least tear down the original motor and see if it is a candidate for a quality rebuild. My own just rebuilt motor, by me, had broken rings on some...

    1963 M37 - Pre-start checklist

There is about a four inch extension rod that attaches to the pinch weld tiny hole, the other end to the near end of the throttle spring. Otherwise, the spring is way too stretched. You can make one out of coat hanger wire. On my truck, the stock location of the spring/tiny "rod" had some...

M37 square lock washer / body washer questions

I just finished new welting on my rear fenders, they were off for painting, painted both the fender and the side where the welting goes. To see where I had to use a punch to put the bolt holes, I started at one end with a clamp holding the welting to the side, the used blue painter's tape about...

    Engine mystery?

I just finished a six month saga with my own M37's engine. It seemed to run fine, being new to me, but decided to a compression check, had about 85/80/80/80/70/40. So thought it best to do a full rebuild. I did it all in my driveway, being in UpState SC, I worked many hours each day, took the...

    M37 "creating" legroom

in my rebuild, I just adjusted the clutch pedal free play per the TM, which brings the clutch pedal up pretty high, and since i am 6foot 2, it is pretty cramped for my legs. I think I may re-adjust it to sure disengage the clutch, but be lower, maybe I don't need so much of a pedal arc to...

    1963 M37 - Pre-start checklist

After a six month engine removal, tear down, then three months at a machine shop with virtually all new internals, I put the motor back together with the guidance of the TM's, help on this and other forums, phone calls to M 37 experts, and after hundreds of hours of work, making all new lines...

M37 square lock washer / body washer questions

yes there is a thin "weatherstrip" that goes between the removable rear fender and the bed's wheel well. Available from the vendors. If you de-rust and properly prime and paint the two metal parts, I am sure you will be good for many years. NAM VET

M37 square lock washer / body washer questions

Bought an assortment of new "old" square washers from Snake River for the bolts that will show on my M37's restoration. The toothed ones are for making sure those fasteners that need a good electrical ground. NAM VET

    Finally restoring the M37

When I was in Germany, '69-70, the Norton bikes where top dog, not just because of their performance, but also because of their revolutionary anti-vibration engine mounts. Quite a few other young officers had Nortons, and the prior Atlas bikes, and then the Commando's. I road one once, just...

    Ok lets talk Gasoline

Gunny, here in SC the gas stations in the "winter" or what passes for winter sell a gas that has a higher Reid Vapor Pressure, a fuel that vaporizes more, for older carburator cars. In my Superformance 427 Cobra Replica I had carb percolation troubles with the Winter fuel, and could tell...

    24 Volt System jump starting

before you spend money on a replacment/rebuilt generator, look up a starter/generator repair shop in your area, they can quickly tell you if it is down, and fix it, or if your problem is in the voltage regulator. Rebuilt M 37 generators are available, if your shop doesn't want to fix your, for...

    Vent Crowl Seal

the adhesive is good, but the whole replacement is a bit tricky. First, thoroughly clean the slot, derust if necessary. Put tiny dabs of the adhesive down in the bottom of the channel, because if you put it on the rubber strip, it will stick before you get it all perfectly set down in the...
