I've been very positive and professional through the whole process. Like I said before, I've made mistakes before as well. The important thing for me is to resolve it in a way that doesn't result in me having to go through another rear-axle swap again anytime soon.
I'm taking it in on Tuesday morning of this coming week. The shop has been around 30+ years, so I don't think they'll go out of business, but we'll see just how willing they are to stand behind their mistake. The guy called me yesterday and was giving me some BS about how they *must* have put...
No chunks. No singing or howling noises at highway speeds. The shop offered to inspect it and replace the bearings... should I bother or just try to get them to reimburse me for the tow? At this point I'm not very confident in their abilities, but then again I have made bonehead moron...
That's the thing. The NOS rear end assembly I got from another SS member (for $250, but I had to ship it from NJ to Chicago which cost more than that). Should have been simple.
I can now CONFIRM that the shop that put it in did NOT fill with gear oil. It looks like there wasn't any...
Good to know. I'm just praying that the new axle wasn't damaged too much by whatever the **** it was that went wrong (mis-aligned? no oil?) It sounded fine for the first mile or so, then started with all the crazy nasty noises. I don't plan to do much 4-wheeling or towing, so once I can get...
Jury is still out as to whether fluid was added or not. I generally do work myself, but there are some things I do not have the tools or the 400 lb lifting power to accomplish on my own, so I get a shop to do it.
Got my new starter from Tom at Ohio Generator. It works marvellously and sounds like it could crank all day (not that I'll be testing that theory). From a couple recent posts, it sounds like I need to do the Doghead Starter Relay conversion asap.
Unfortunately, the rear axle swap did not go...
I bought a NOS rear axle (drum to drum) and had a shop put it in. Got about a mile down the road and it started making these HORRIBLE grinding sounds and the truck didn't want to move. Pulled over and the rear brakes (initial suspect) were not hot, but the pumpkin was hot as blazes. Had it...
Good to know: I just talked to Tom at Ohio Generator. Apparently he and his brother re-designed the original Delco starter back in the day and they've supplied thousands of them to the military as an upgraded replacement. He's gonna get back to me tonite about whether he has the parts to...
Somebody outbid me on an ebay auction for a used OEM starter. Gonna try the guy Ranchhopper suggested next. Also, I saw some kind of military bulletin when I was google searching the Delco part # saying that Ohio Generator makes a good replacement starter. Anybody used one of these?
Forgot to answer your other question.... yes, the headlights come on and look normal. I have not yet acquired a second person to check what they look like when I turn the key to "start", but judging by the drop on the voltmeter, I'm guessing they dim significantly.
Don't think I mentioned that I am not experiencing any other issues with the truck or electrical system. When I turn the ignition on, all behaves normally. I suppose it's possible that with the increased load of the starter circuit (whatever is going on with it), it is overloading the system.
Thanks all. @Doghead, it sounds like I need to load test a lot of cables then? And the batteries...
I am kind of suspect of the front battery, as it was installed by the military an uknown amount of years ago. The rear battery was installed by the previous owner about a year ago. I did...
