How have you civilized your MEP Generators?

The item title was/is "Rectangle Analog AMP Meter AC 50A + Current Transformer". The seller has a huge eBay store called "Asia Engineer". If you search within that store for something like "ac meter" it'll help. There are 20A, 50A, and 100A versions, digital versions, etc.. Since there is no...

How have you civilized your MEP Generators?

I see right around 11 PSI at the gauge when running or priming. I suspected that the 10-year old fuel I'm trying to use up would make it slowly drop, but it's holding steady so far. A different length and/or angle of the fitting for the gauge might let you install it without having to make the...

MEP-002A High Voltage and Burnt Connector

CVT1 is a current voltage transformer, and is part of the regulator system, so possibly the transformer failed and caused that line to carry a high current. That might also confuse the regulator, which might still be working properly since terminal 17 on the regulator board is supplied by CVT1...

How have you civilized your MEP Generators?

I picked up a couple Chinese 0-50A Ammeters with current transformers from eBay. They come as a set, one meter and one transformer. They're set up so you run the wire you want to measure current in though the hole in the current transformer, and connect two leads from there to a meter. Now I...

New MEP004A owner looking for light-off sanity check

Ever since I watched a power company lineman loosen the output wires at the stepdown transformer across the driveway one at a time and wiggle them to see which ones were being used, we've had computers and electronics like TVs on UPSs with under and over voltage protection, as well as surge...

New MEP004A owner looking for light-off sanity check

Hey, that's good news. I know what you mean about building confidence. Last time I exercised my 003A it powered the whole house for 2-1/2 hours and nothing odd happened, so I'm starting to get the idea that I might be able to rely on it. I'm glad your radiator repair held. That's a lot...

New MEP004A owner looking for light-off sanity check

Yup, pretty much the same situation I have. I do the monthly 003A exercise runs midday on weekdays when most of the neighbors are at work. If the nearest one ever complains about noise during an outage, I plan to offer the convenience outlet to him. I've run a 1500W heater from it, so it...

Your neighbors must have had a heck of a party if they're still nursing headaches. :-)

Often engine fans have the blades at oddball spacings to prevent them from whining. They're balanced, even though they look like they aren't.

    MEP-002A synchronization question

I believe the generator is similar to an Onan DJE, and the engine is an Onan model 3413. This is from searching this board.

MEP-003a back to life, I hope (fuel system clean up, re-connection switch fix)

Yes, you're correct about any volume before the check valve getting added to the combustion chamber volume. There are online calculators for figuring combustion chamber volume, compression ratio, and compression pressure. But it would be best to put the check valve at the tip of the fitting...

If the fins are copper, I'd bet that the tubes are brass or copper. The assembly process may have solder coated them so they look silver colored. Joining aluminum to copper is not something a radiator manufacturer would choose to do.

MEP-003a back to life, I hope (fuel system clean up, re-connection switch fix)

There are two valves. One is the check valve to capture the pressure at each compression stroke, and the other is the relief valve so you can zero the gauge and start over. The check valve is the one that needs to be right at the tip of the fitting that screws into the cylinder. If you want...

MEP-003a back to life, I hope (fuel system clean up, re-connection switch fix)

Be careful that no significant volume is in your test rig between the cylinder head and the one way valve to the gauge. I've seen compression gauges that come with adapters for different spark plug thread sizes, with the check valve separated from the head by an adapter, and they give...

    No crank on the 004a

I'm very interested in what you learn about the economics of selling power. WVO is pretty cheap or free, but maintenance, time, etc..

    No crank on the 004a

Glad that part was an easy fix, Elvis.

    No crank on the 004a

After some successful runs, my 003A started doing the same thing. Upon disassembling the starter, I found that the grease between the grooved motor shaft and the inner surface of the Bendix drive was like tar, so the gear wasn't quite going far enough to allow the solenoid to make its main...

Luckily when you damage a radiator like you did, the part that needs fixing is usually easy to get to with solder and a big iron or copper, as opposed to when one springs a random leak.

    MEP-002A synchronization question

Go for it with an 002A. If this is a project, get a servo or stepper and a microcontroller and start programming. No doubt it would be fun, and when it's done, you'll have the ability to connect to your microgrid without having to get an expensive synchronizer. If I can help with programming...
