Thanks for the pictures! I picked up a small chainfall for the purpose but I can say, if you reenforce the hand winch by adding an additional lower mount it will lift that tire easy. I think I would swap the cable for the next size larger but it would work in a pinch with no winch. Just flip...

Your friend's attitude is one I am becoming all to familier with, ask a few questions and they start to assume you are trying to cheat the system or that you are stupid. The sanctimonious little canned answers I have gotten from MDOT and the FS are so irritating. Thanks for cut and pasting...

Can't seem to get a response to written questions, will start calling and making a pest of myself this week. Growing increasingly gun-shy about trying to doing things the right way however. -Ken

Thanks for the pictures! My isle way was 14 inches, just too small. The bus I took them from was 18. It made a difference I think if I pull my troop seats out I would be able to buy another 1.5-2 inches on each side by sticking the seat base out over my sides some. Might still be able to...

Licensed and titled the truck today. Then I pulled seats out of a bus to start mocking up the interior. I never would have thought the width of a 5ton would be smaller than that of a school bus but it is by half a foot or more. This is how we think the seats will be set. Other...

Got all the top bow extensions remilled but not all of them bolted on. It makes the overall hight still a very tall 10' 6" but that is better than 11' 6". Have about 5' 8" to walk around under, I feel that is a fair compromise. -Ken

"Have you (talked with) BLM about your idea (yet) ?" I have written BLM twice in the last three weeks to inquire about permits and they haven't gotten back to me yet. I am sure it is working it's way through the system. I have never dealt with them but I imagine it will be similar to the...

I thought that would perk people's interest. Yes I am. My trailer has the king pin mounted on the end of a short 12"X12" snout lets call it. That is bolted to the trailer frame. I am going to built a new one, drop it farther and convert it to lunette. I can still swap back in say 30-45 min...

3 steps back Been one of those days. I diagnosed my starting issues as 2 bad batteries, on in each 24v string. One of them would drop to 10v with just the lights on. Pulled them out, combined the two good ones into a single 24v unit and she turns over like a greased weasel I see no reason...

Exactly, no one can agree on what rules I need to follow and failure to follow them properly has real consequences. I have written to BLM to inquire about commercial use of their roads. The Forest Service has a permit process but nothing I could find on BLM's site mentions anything like that...

That I want to do it commercially is adding the wrinkle to it but I will investigate your idea. This is the first wave of our MDOT compliance and the state is sort of in turmoil, again my great timing. It is why all the people I talked to prior to starting down this road were so far off in...

Primarily it will be on BLM graded roads. You know the type they do maintenance on every few years. It will not be 'off road' in any hardcore sense, just in a touristy way. -Ken

Been spending a lot of time talking with DOT. Montana has recently accepted Federal DOT rules verbatim for all intrastate trucks. At issue is whether or not they feel I need to meet the same standards as a charter bus. Some things have been easy to hash out like drive line hoops or the lack...

As long as the trigger voltage is good (6 to 28vdc in this case) the other switching side is simply a contact load. In this case they were a DC trigger and an AC contact. It is true that these relays will latch on to DC an not release properly but in this application it is running as a simple...

Battery Woes Finished wiring the backup light and alarm. I am using some big relays to build the aux power system. I tapped into the line to the voltage meeter to trigger the two solid state relays. One switches 24v the other 12v. Well it will switch 12v when I get the converter. I...

I got the steering shaft u-joints in last night and that was an unexpected hassle. They are those little joints that you have to take all 4 caps off and insert them into both yokes before pressing them back together. I wish I had tested that before assembling one side... Anyway, they were...

How to grease the short drive shaft between trans an xfer case?

I just had to do this on mine. I ground the tip of the grease gun down some and then took a die grinder to the yoke to make room. Worked great. Use a full face mask to keep the metal slivers off your face. -Ken
