Hi Scottladdy! Thanks for the reply and info.
I thought about it for a few days, but in the end since this is the first time since we've owned the truck (nearly 3 years now) that any fusible links had burned, I just went ahead and replaced the burned fusible links with new all new fusible...
Ok, another short update:
O'reilly finally got the replacement starter for the broken replacement starter that they shipped me. So I went to their store, inspected, and picked up the new replacement....
but they did not have the fusible link that I needed... so I found and ordered a kit of 6...
hummm.... following this thread.
I would like to upgrade a couple fusible links that burned when my starter locked (nose cone cracked and put the starter in a bind, in process of replacing/rebuilding) with maxi fuses. And several other circuits too, like headlights and other important items...
Well, I have an update.... sort of...
Got the Wilson starter today via UPS.
The large outside box was in perfect condition, no tears, holes, dents, etc.
A lot of heavy packing material in the box, with the smaller box which contained the starter in the middle of the packing material.
The...
Hi CucvRus! I had originally intended replacing the fusible links with maxi fuses just like you mentioned, as it would make it much easier to change out a blown fuse in the future. But at least from what I understand (and I could be wrong) that doing so isn't advisable.
But I don't know for...
Needful information to know. With our M1008, this is the first vehicle that I've personally had to deal with fusible links.
Had heard of them before, knew what they did, but didn't know the details.
Thanks to All who have added input and information to this thread! [thumbzup]
Ahhhh..... its on the black connector... well, that makes more sense.
Should have known it would have to be located somewhere else besides on the wire covering....
I didn't know the wire color would also specify the gauge, that makes it much easier too.
Appreciate the heads up about the...
Yep, I've been reading it.
Edit:
Well let me rephrase that, I am reading it... but theres a lot good info in the additional comments below the two main posts.
Thanks! [thumbzup]
Thanks CucvRus! Appreciate it, will be looking for it. [thumbzup][thumbzup][thumbzup]
The starter is supposed to be here tomorrow.
I still have to go and buy some fusible link wire. But I have to identify what gauges I need first, as it looks to be 2 different sizes. But the size is not on...
Wow Warthog Thanks a Bunch! [thumbzup][thumbzup][thumbzup]
I've been going to look, but haven't had time to even get on here for 2 days now. Pitching and Catching right now.
I think I'll order the nose cone and a rebuild kit you posted, and rebuild this starter to have a backup on hand...
Thanks Warthog!
I also found it in the CUCV Wiki too:
***bracket bolt - 14060613 - M8 x 1.25 x 20 - hardware store
***starter bracket DD - 14028931
I was just thinking I would have to figure out the bolt sizes when I came across that info in the Wiki.
That one note alone just saved me a lot...
Hi Doghead!
Yeah, I can see why, with the starter hanging by only two bolts on the one end.
Wish I had noticed that before now, but at least it broke (didn't start) here at the house and didn't leave me sitting somewhere.
Thats one reason why one of the first things I did to this truck was...
Hi cpf240!
Hummmm....... Ok...... :shrugs: Going to go try to look up the TM to see what bracket you are talking about
I know I read somewhere in the sticky's... or the wiki... that some of them had a bracket and there being two possible styles or something...
I Didn't know that...
Hi cucvrus! I actually have a Wilson starter ordered, it's coming UPS to my house. I need to get this truck back running asap as it's my daily driver. Our other truck (99' dodge) is not to reliable... had a whole host of problems with it lately....
However, if I can still fix this starter, I...
Really?! I did not know that. I'll try the search to find the part number.
Thanks Warthog [thumbzup]
And yes, if the engine block had broke.... that would have been Extremely Bad
Just wanted to post a quick update:
I took the starter off today... before it started snowing [thumbzup]
And I found that on the back side of the starter (side that faces against the block) that the entire ear on the starter, where the bolt goes through, had broke. The entire corner piece fell...
Hi Warthog!
Yes the truck is still 24 volt.
Still has the original starter, I'm going to take it off in the morning... depending on the weather.
Once I get it off and clean it up a bit, I'll know exactly what I've got.
Thanks for the info on ASP Wholesale, once I'm sure about what I've...
