The rear shaft bearing support is the only part I use grade 8 bolts on. I also use "Nordlock" washers on the bolts. This part is the one part you do NOT want coming loose !
After the support is bolted down and torqued (33 ft Ibs to 38 ft Ibs. ) it's time to install the piston. First off...
Today I finished with the servos and started with the reduction unit.
If you follow the book and have the special adjusting tools it is pretty straight forward. If you don't have the adjusting tools it gets harder.
The first thing you do is adjust the tool. You need 1/8" of the adjusting nut...
The worst one I had was one got stuck in my eye. I was wearing safety googles too ! Somehow it wound itself around the googles air holes and got me.
All I can say is thank the good LORD for lidocaine ointment !
Spent the day cleaning up the "output shaft bearing retainer" and apply piston.
I also ran my left index finger through the wire wheel on my grinder  !!!
I took off about 1-1/4" of skin. Lots of blood, no fun at all.
Need to pay more attention when cleaning parts on the wire wheel !
You don't need to modify the front servo if you don't want too. The stock servo works just fine.
The modified servo I'm using will give me engine braking abilities and it has a greater surface area on the piston for more holding power.
Absolutely, totally agree with you 100 percent !!!!!!!!!
Do not toss those parts !!!!!
I would clean them up and spray a good protective on them. The case I would paint. Then stash them away. Someday you might need them or someone else will need those parts.
I'm going to spend tomorrow thinking of a way I can install some kind of return spring for the reduction piston. There just has to be a way this can be done. Then again maybe there isn't any other way. Well see.
It was raining like "a cow pissing on a flat rock" today so I decided to install the front and rear servos .
During this I realized I had forgotten to remove the check ball and spring in the modified front servo I'm going to use. I posted about this in post #121 . I showed what needed to be...
Dendoff Springs replied today. They are unable to make this spring. They were my best shot.
So that leaves me with just one option now. Pick the best spring I have and go with it.
I still have three 303M transmissions to tear down so there still might be a really good one there.
Doubtful though...
Here's a picture of that oil pan I was working on until I found that crack.
That crack is right above the water chamber. Well there goes half a gallon of Lacquer Thinner, two hours of wire brushing and three hours of sandblasting down the drain.
No progress on the transmission today either...
Well I have a lead on one company in Canada that "might" be able to make these springs.
Their "Dendoff Springs" in Surrey B.C.
I sent him pictures and specifications on the spring.
There was another company I was talking too. Today they said they could make the springs ! The problem is they...
First off, thanks for adding me to the membership roster !
Second, thanks for the info on Tom Wolboldt. I'll try and get in touch with him.
I'll let you know how that goes.
Still waiting on bolts. I'm installing all new bolts in the transmission. Stainless Steel with serrated flange where I can. I hate dealing with old rusted bolts.
Took some pictures today but forgot to bring in the camera.
I'm working on increasing oil volume like I mentioned to "Dave" .
The...
Funny you mentioned "oil pressure" Dave. I've been looking into increasing the oil volume in the 303M HydraMatic. When new these transmissions leaked like a sieve, now that their old and worn out the oil lose is tremendous !
I posted I was looking for a 301MG transmissions rear oil pump and...
I'm still looking for a manufacturer who will take up the challenge. I totally agree about using an old spring that could ruin the whole transmission if it decides to let go.
I took it to the machine shop last week and asked if he could recommend anyone. He had a few ideas, but they didn't pan...
Hey guys. I'm looking for a rear pump and discharge pipe for a 301MG transmission.
I figured you guys out here would be my best chance of finding these parts.
I'm working on a project for the 303M transmission, and this pump just might be the answer.
Thanks for any help.
Rustystud.
Here's some...
I spent today sandblasting parts from that last 303M I tore down (all the transmissions I picked up in Canada had water damage). Actually, it was originally a 302M but it was converted in 1964 with the "A" and "B" modifications. Basically, they added two more clutch plates in the front drum...
