We had a JD tractor about that same year, maybe a little older when I was growing up. It ran on Propane.
I still have a JD tractor but it is newer.

You can take the noise part of the starter loses and turn it to match the old starter.
When I got my M923A1 the starter was bad and when I got the replacement I had to rotate the noise on the new one.[thumbzup]
Sounds like it is sucking air from some place.
You need to check all the fuel lines for leaks, Fuel filter housing and the fuel tank switch valve.

I would go with a 5 ton.
I towed a Deuce with my Deuce one time up some long hills and it will get down to a crawl....... On one hill I got down to 20 mph and that was only 12,000lbs.:oops:

If your priming pump is good it should not take too long to go from filter to the IP pump. Maybe 30 pumps.
Did you open the bleeder valve under the pump?
It can be a PITA.
When I replace the filter I put a little air pressure in the fuel tank to push it up to the filter faster.

I am headed to Austin, TX in Nov. with an empty 16' trailer and I can bring two cabs to TX if anyone needs help with trans. I also can pick them up in Barstow and store them till then or store them till you come pick them up here in AZ.
The Brakes looks the same, but the pads look different.
If you pull the seal retainer (housing) it is just a plan to get back it.
I do not think it would leak around it. I did not use any sealant.
