What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

That is a 28MT gear reduction starter. That bracket will work. I made plenty of them myself. Then about 5 years ago I had a machine shop make me up 10. Since then I have come across several new stock ones for the stock direct drive starter. That bracket is fine if it is tight it will do the same...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Special bolts. You can get them at a GM dealer or a parts store. But like I said. I would use the old ones till you get new ones if you must. I often use old ones and I change them also. I look them over. I had new ones broken as well as old ones. So no GOLDEN rule that solves all issues. it's a...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Fairly easy to change the starter. Make sure the support bracket is in place. The small wire is an 11/32" on a direct drive starter and 5/16" on a gear reduction starter. The starter bolters are metric M10 x 1.5 with 15mm hex heads. I would replace the bolts if you have new ones available. If...

M1008 glow plugs don’t stay on

Check your glow plugs also. they could be all bad and it is sensing it thru the glow plug controller. Also the relay could be going bad under the hood. Hard to diagnose from afar. Good Luck. report back.

    Converting 24volt to 12 volt M1009 CUCV

In theory. But I still like a direct drive starter. It takes more abuse and lasts longer has been my experience. I was unaware of cost. But at the time the CUCV was made GM did not use gear reduction starters. That was always a Chrysler thing back in the day. Learn something new about cost. But...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

There is a female connector between the engine and firewall that has two large pink wires going in one side and what looks like a resistor or a diode jabbed in it completing the circuit, doesn't look right, is that supposed to be there? Yes that diode is supposed to be there. I know it looks...

    Converting 24volt to 12 volt M1009 CUCV

OK. I see that. But he is saying he switched to a gear reduction starter and that won't matter if it is direct drive or not. 24 volt or 12 volt. The direct drive and the gear reduction require the amps required of the 24 volt starter. Don't matter what drive it is. That was my point. So your...

    Converting 24volt to 12 volt M1009 CUCV

I had switched my starter two years ago to a gear reduction starter so cranking amps should not be a problem. How does this change the cranking amps? I am a bit confused. That would be a new lesson for me. 24 volts starters and 12 volt starters still require good amperage to work properly...

Mystery wire near heater switch on m1009 ???

That was easy. Fix it don't replace it. I like what I see. I hope you had the spring in that socket before you soldered the contact back on.

    CUCVRUS Repair Projects

A few more pictures of my efforts today. Rain has hampered all operations for today. Once wet I surrender to the house and recliner for the day. No point in over doing it. I learned when I was younger to fix things. I had a Yamaha DT250 dirt bike. I lived in a rural area. When things broke I had...

    CUCVRUS Repair Projects

Today was a very wet and miserable day. I had 2 hours of no rain so I took advantage of that time to crawl under and service the M1009 I have here to work on. All went well. My tip of the day would be change the oil pan drain plug seal. $3. or less gets you 2 new ones. Not needed every time you...

Losing fuel prime many things done already, still won't run unless bled

I think we talked on the phone about this. The nozzle lines are 19mm or 3/4" which equates to 19.1mm. They are line wrench tight. So get them lines off the delivery nozzles. Put the entire pump and lines together in a vise with soft jaws clamping the flange, The lines are 16mm / 5/8" at the pump...

Secret for installing a lift pump...

Sneekeye the pump you have pictured on the left is incorrect. The spring is not visible from outside the pump arm. The pump you have pictured on the right is the CORRECT pump. Spring is in the casting on top of the pump lever arm. Thank you for the pictures. That left pump will screw you every...

M1009 no ignition after doghead relay mod

Just a quick note. Fully charged 12 volt batteries are useless unless they are properly load tested. Amperage is key to trouble free starts. Good Luck. Be safe. Happy Holidays.

Secret for installing a lift pump...

There is an issue with the fuel lift pumps. A few manuals list an incorrect pump. I did a visual post on the 2 different pumps. The correct CUCV fuel pump has no play when the pump lever is depressed. The pumping starts immediately. The other incorrect pump has about 1/4"- 1/2" of free play. The...

Mystery wire near heater switch on m1009 ???

More detailed pictures would be helpful. But from the picture posted you do have some issues going on. The switch on the fuel pedal is the electric passing gear kick down switch. Get a few more pictures up in that area and I can post a few pictures of the stock set up. Trace that spliced wire...

    CUCVRUS Repair Projects

Today it was a bit cold and damp but a job needed to be completed on the project M1009. I had the filler neck , fuel tank skid plate, and draw bar for pintle hitch to reinstall on my customers truck. I used the handy little battery operated kerosene pump to transfer the fuel from the old tank...

1986 CUCV M1009 Decade after being wrecked.

After being rained on all day today and yesterday I needed a break. Breaking the John Deere 710C backhoe mast was not the break I was looking for. But it happens and it is fixed again. I was tried and wet. I wanted to get at least one thing done on my Decade project. I went to tighten the...
