    Advice Please: Planning 4L80 Conversion

Thanks for the info on the speedo - I did not know. ;) A lot of that is because I do not have a like-for-like core - that is like $900 alone. Then the controller is $1600. Shipping and taxes are like another $600. The tranny itself is like $2300 which is not terrible for a tested tranny.

    Advice Please: Planning 4L80 Conversion

I got a quote from a local drive train shop in Florida. Here is what they stated: They would supply a rebuilt 4L80e that is fully tested (y) They would supply a 1300-1600 Stall HD Torque Converter (y) They stated I should be able to use my current gear box. They stated I should buy the...

    Advice Please: Planning 4L80 Conversion

I would like to ask the collective advice on collecting parts to replace the 3 speed TH350 with a 4 speed 4L80(E?). I have a 1990 M998 with a 6.2, and TH350. I have done a lot of reading and actually I think I am more confused than before. I decided I want to buy the transmission and other...

Anyone Swapped This 6 Speed 4L80e

I am nothing close to being an expert so rely on the collective of experts here are they know their stuff. All I wanted to mention is that there is a sticky at the top of this forum regarding this subject: https://www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/lots-of-questions-about-4l80e-swaps.152874/ that has...

    Light switch mod for safety

Wanted this mod as part of making the M998 street legal, which included: adding reverse lights, license plate light, redoing all the lights that did not work, housings filled with mud, bad grounds, broken lenses, etc. Around here, they love to ticket for any reason. Bought one of the overpriced...

M998: Loud Pop when trying to start

I wanted to thank the forum members that guided me on this issue. You all saved me throwing parts at it, saving me lots of $ and aggravation. Much appreciated! It started right up with the two new batteries. In case this information is useful to someone in the future, while the Odyssey is...

M998: Loud Pop when trying to start

Thanks everyone for all the guidance. Last night, I took the one battery that blew the cap to the local Pep Boys that still has one of those "old school" Frankenstein battery testers. that sits on the floor and looks like it 100 years old. As I have seen it in action before, it made some nice...

M998: Loud Pop when trying to start

Thanks for all the tips. I plan on taking both batteries out to get them both tested. They don't have the date checked off on the stickers so I don't know for sure. They are the old Excide ones. I don't know if the prior owner changed them, or if those are the ones that came with it originally...

M998: Loud Pop when trying to start

Got it. So assuming one or both batteries fail the load test at the auto parts store, what is everyone using as a replacement? I am sure the auto parts guys will try to tell me their off-the-shelf car ones will work just fine. The military batteries are hard to come by and close to $600 each...

How would one test it with it on the engine?

M998: Loud Pop when trying to start

I ordered a can of electronics cleaner which says it can be used on motors and alternators, and the like. I will remove the starter and give it a good cleaning and look for anything which might be obscured while it is on the car and covered in dirt. There are a few places in town that say they...

M998: Loud Pop when trying to start

Sorry for the late reply - long day. I looked at the battery compartment - looks good to me. Terminals were tight. No signs anything melted or burnt. Insulation does not look melted. Batteries did not look like they were bulging but I did not remove them. Nothing exploded. Plan is to try to...

M998: Loud Pop when trying to start

Yes, the wait light and break light come on but dim out when i try start. The pop definitely coming below the passenger seat. My wife jumped! The stater is caked in dirt. Probably the original one. Plan is, if the tow truck ever shows, is to try and clean the starter as well as I can on the...

M998: Loud Pop when trying to start

Folks, Once again I need the assistance of the experts here. Was returning from a car show and stopped for diesel and I made the mistake of shutting off the engine. When I attempted to restart we heard a huge pop! Sounded like maybe it came from the battery area under the passenger seat? The...

Need Advice on disfunctional Windshield Wiper Motor

Folks - thank you all for the help on this. As sometimes for me, this turned out to be a comedy of errors that was not so funny. Turns out the positive red wire going to the battery directly I was using was defective, invisibly fraid, and although the VOM read 24V, there was just one strand of...

Need Advice on disfunctional Windshield Wiper Motor

Ok, I have been staring at this for hours, and reran the resistance multiple times. I think the leads going into the wiper motor are as follows: H - high speed +24V L - Low speed +24 P - Unknown - seems always to be infinite to ground, leads #27 & #71 on all switch positions on both units...

Need Advice on disfunctional Windshield Wiper Motor

I am wondering if I both the new and the old one are both defective! I did some more tests. From the switch, there is a four wire connector that goes to the motors. I pulled the connector off the motor end on each, and measured the resistance from each lead to ground. There is a difference for...

Need Advice on disfunctional Windshield Wiper Motor

Thank you both for your help. I did a bit more testing and now see a difference between the old and new motor. On the old motor, #27 to ground stays infitite with the switch off. On the new motor the reading is 5.5 ohms with the switch off!?!?!?! I would have expected it to be infinite...
