I don't recall hearing of anyone saying that they were on a flat surface with no load putting it in low-reverse and breaking the case.
That being said too many broken cases seem to indicate that there was indeed a load of some sort on the trucks that have had the problem. Backing up a hill or...

I can't say that it is very good since it amounts to taking a meter and checking the voltages around...
Welcome and although a fuse can look good it can still be bad. Swing by a Wally World or any auto parts place or Radio Shack and get a cheap meter. That will greatly aid your troubleshooting.
Swing by the Harbor Freight store closest to you (I see two) in your area and just by the cheapest meter they have or it may be in a sale flyer for free.
Throw it in the truck to have with you all the time.
