Got the driver's seat cover from Jatonka installed. I need to pull it a little tighter, but it's very well made and a good fit.
I also added these flip up steps to the rear bumper.
I spent a few years jumping out of planes and was in a pretty bad motorcycle accident a while back and have...
You can mitigate one downside of a soft top (water pooling when it rains) by sliding a sheet of plywood between the bows and the top. This makes it semi-rigid and prevents it from sagging as water builds up. Which prevents you from having two gallons of water flow off when you take that first...
Just another perspective... I was in sort of the same boat as you. I'm handy enough with a wrench and have wanted one since I drove one in the Army. I knew that I could buy a truck at auction and take the luck of the draw, buy from a reseller and pay more than I wanted, or buy from a private...
I'll be following along to see what you decide to do about AC. It's already in the 80s here and will be in the 90s and above soon enough. I take the doors off in the summer, but it's not a lot of help when it's 90 degrees and 80% humidity... I'm a lot more of a heat wimp than I was 30 years ago.
Install a VIC with noise cancelling headsets. Cheaper than most other options and if your passenger is talking your ear off, you can turn down the volume or just switch it off :-D
So I've got my VIC-1 system up and running and installed in the HMMWV. The only thing I'm missing are two of the plastic "caps" that close off the unused cable connectors on the AM 1780.
Here are some of the more recent version:
though I'd prefer the older, screw-in type.
Does anyone know...
These young whippersnappers with their fancy self-cancelling turn signals and their intermittent wipers! Back in my day we turned the signals off ourselves and if the rain wasn't hard enough to need constant wipers, we turned the wipers on and off ourselves too! Now get off my lawn
Just...
Honestly one of the coolest things about driving these things around is the people you meet. Almost every time I stop for groceries, or pull in to get fuel, or pop in to the hardware store, someone wants to talk... either about their time in the service, or mine, or how their uncle Joe was in...
I've seen the various pieces of those for sale on eBay, and seriously considered that... but they always seemed pretty pricey. If I recall, the last time I saw them they were asking $100 for each of the side sections, minus the tire mount and the parts that attach to the bed.
Are you talking about the gold-colored pieces in this picture?
<edited> Looks like I don't have them any more. My truck didn't have the rear belts when I bought it but the reinforcement pieces were already under the fender.
Can you find the paper templates for installing them? Those would...
There are nylon washers between the rack and the bed (on the top) and between the steel washers and the bed (on the bottom) to reduce galvanic corrosion. I really cranked down on it, so they're pretty compressed and don't seem to have much "give" when attempting to rock the carrier back to front...
Here you go...
The frame runs from just inside the tailgate to just behind the four-man top tie-downs and from as tight against the driver's side as it would fit to about a foot from the passenger side of the bed. I was trying to maximize to footprint of the mount to reduce the leverage...
I'm with you. I think everyone should do what they want to their truck, but I prefer something that's a closer match to the originals. Of course, my truck has the improved driver's seat, which means I'm not dealing with extreme discomfort. Plus, my kids (6, 9, and almost-12) don't care about the...
It definitely wouldn't--at least not without touching. The tire is about 4" off the bed and a few inches above the four-man top. It's possible I could get the short/wagon cover over it... but the tire would make a bulge in the top. Since I plan on sticking with the four-man, it's not an issue...
I finally decided what to do about carrying a spare.
This is my (easily removable) spare tire setup. It's bolted to the bed but comes out easily. It's right up against the side of the bed so it doesn't impede the view through the rear window. It's upright so most of the bed area is still...
No pics, but I got a lot done this weekend.
The radio tray was squeaking when the truck hit a bump, so I pulled it. The little mounts that hold the tray legs were loose--the rivnuts were about to give way. So I pulled them and the aluminum of the tunnel was cracked, so I couldn't install new at...
Peltier cooling has been around a long time, but one significant problem (as EladB mentioned) is that the thermocouple sandwich is (almost) heat neutral. So for one side to get three degrees cooler, the other has to get three degrees warmer. Aside from the need to exhaust the warm air and the...
Back when the 82nd still had Sheridans I watched one of those burn in. Man it made a sound when it hit the ground. That was back before cell phones so I don't have a video of it, but it was VERY memorable.
