Try pulling it out a little bid and then turning it first one way and then the other to make the spring inside shrink a little. When I did mine the spring stayed inside and I had to use a small ninty degree scribe to get it out. I just threaded the scribe all the way down until it too came...

I too am interested in a cheap but effective system to clean my own waste oil and tranny fluid. A gravity system with spin on filters, five gallons at a time max, yet small enough to take along in my truck when the shumer hits the high speed rotating device. Any ideas would be helpfull:)

Just take your time. Use a mirror it helps. I did mine a few weeks ago. The hardest part for me was getting the intake manifold off. I don't know what they used to put it on with but I had to use my engine hoist and had the front wheels off the groung before it finally broke loose:)
Good luck with your truck, but you need a good complete set of manuals. I to am a paper in hand kind of guy. Check the classifieds or ebay. A 100 dollar bill sounds expensive but it is less than a hour at any shop for labor alone.:deadhorse:
