Yep! Now that I've ate and I'm recharged I'll share the details...
The bed measures about 75x30". The frame is made from 1 1/4" schedule 80 aluminum pipe. You only needed a single 20ft piece. I used standard aluminum joints and flanges from Grainger. Right now its put together with 2x 90...
A couple weeks ago I had an idea to build a fold down cot in the cab of my truck. Lord knows we don't go fast so any sizable journey will probably require an overnight somewhere. My goal was to keep it simple/easy to build, cheapish, lightweight, and comfortable.
I just finished building it...
I know with "normal" tires it's standard practice to replace the valve stems, but to me it seems the only wear part on the FMTV stems is the seal. It's nothing more than a bolt with a tube right? Are we worried about vibration causing cracking in the valve stem assembly?
You're right, $30 a...
I'm in the process of doing a tire change on my M1085. I've taken the easy way out and taken it to a tire shop :naner:
We've only done one tire so far because we're waiting on o-rings, but the results were less than stellar. The morning after the tire change the tire was flat. To make sure...
I finally got the no-start issue figured out. There are 2 sets of connectors in the drivers side dash that are physically interchangeable. JP31/JP31x and JP43/JP43X. If you don't read the identifications tags on these it is easy to get them mixed up when you're reinstalling them. Swapping...
The truck is finally home! Yesterday me and a buddy drove out to the yard where I did the swap, got her ready to drive, and drove it about 25 miles into downtown Houston in rush hour traffic. It was hot and the fan scared the **** out of me the first time it turned on, but it made it without...
Yesterday I got the truck to move again under it own power with the new cab!! The no start issue appears to be caused by a bad wire in the harness that goes between the cab and the chassis. I think I may have accidentally pinched the bundle during some of the heavy lifting. No worries though...
FMTV Truck sales, Can you provide any info on the steering wheel attachment specs? Are our wheels attached using some standard spline we could find on a semi truck steering wheel?
NDT,
It depends on how good your current cab is. Mine had a fair amount of rust and didn't have a turret cover. I figured for the money I would spend on a turrent cover and cutting out/replacing metal, I could have a brand new cab. For me this worked out to be true. If you have access to the...
Well its been a busy week and a half, but I have the cab swapped!
Picking up where I left off, I had to finish removing the harnesses and swapping them between the cabs. This is probably the most difficult part of the project. Getting the main dash harness behind the wiper motor is the most...
Those LED strips may or may not last outside on your truck. Have you tried sand blasting the acrylic? That ought to help with the diffusion. If that doesn't do the trick, you could apply a reflective foil on the back of the acrylic and try shining light through the edge of the material. This...
Life has been crazy lately, but I finally got some time to post an update on the cab swap.
Two weeks ago, I was working on prepping the new cab for the swap when the landlord for the shop I'm working at showed up to change the locks. With some careful negotiation I was able to get some time to...
Try looking at Grainger I believe they sell smaller lengths of both hard and soft brake line.
It sounds like you need hard line, but if you do need some soft line try finding a hydraulic hose shop. I just replaced two hoses and the shop I went to made me nice stock crimp style hoses.
Wooo! Today was a very productive day. Now that businesses are open, I was able to get some new air lines made this morning. Threw them on the truck, connected up the rebuilt relay valve and pressurized the system using a glad hand adapter I made. The system held pressure up to about 30psi...
It's right next to mine haha. Looks like its just a vent for the front of the service brake chamber. Shame on the engineer that drew up that schematic for not including it.
For anyone wondering, theres a line on each side that goes between the two axles brakes vent ports. This line has a...
I'm still trying to figure out which line is which. The schematic diagram only shows two connections to each rear brake chamber, but there are 3 in real life. Can someone shed some light?
Still working on getting the brakes fixed. I have to be able to drive the truck over to another shop with a crane before I can really make any progress on the cab.
If you saw the auction pics, you may have noticed the rear relay valve was completely disconnected. I took it and the...
The cab was delivered yesterday and overall I'm happy with what I got.
The cab is new and has nearly everything shown in the auction listing. I believe the only items missing are the grill and washer fluid reservoir. Looks like I got lucky!
Now to start figuring out how to make everything...
I got the compressor apart this morning and it was indeed the valving in the compressor head which was causing the problem. The unloader valves were a little sticky, but the real culprit was the intake valves sticking. I hit them with a little carb cleaner and WD-40 as well as cleaned up the...
