I would put something like a 2x4 behind the brush guard and attach the come a long to it . That will disperse the pull equally accross the width of the guard and give a more uniform pull and less chance of twisting one section.
I have to agree, there is a lot missing, and chances are it was stripped because it has internal problems. If you get anything get a starter first so you can crank it over and get some compression readings.
Good info on flexplate replacement I just did mine a few months ago, had it in and took it back out to double check the pump fingers. I forget what the torque specs are but are in the TM. NAPA had the flexplate about $90.00 if I remember.

Being from Rhode Island we still observe "Victory Day". It is observed on the monday before, hence this past monday all state offices were closed. Some business's were closed but probably less than 5%. Mail was delivered and most banks i believe were open.

68Impallass is right the Tm9-2320-289-34p figure 140 shows them between the crossmember and frame. Although when I removed my transmission/TC they were above the frame looks like I have to crawl under and move them unless the TM is wrong.
