I know exactly what you mean. These MEP's have quickly become all consuming to me. It's like crack. I can't stop tinkering with it and searching for another one at the next auction. My wife is stating to get a little annoyed too.
I went through this a few years ago with 4k, 6.5k and 7k gas...
I think I am going to have to go in on these too. The only negative side to this is now I am going to have to paint it. And to be perfectly honest with you, after seeing the progress of this thread, I can't wait to get started.
Btw, when you get all done, you should post some before and after...
Jim- You should give this guy a call. His pricing to print/engrave data plates seem reasonable. It would be cool to have an exact replica on metal plates too. Since you have done all the work he should give you a great deal too!

Man that is super cool. You can make just about all the gaskets sans the head gasket. If you're interested I just received a bunch of gaskets. I could mail them to you (maybe even scan them into pdf?) so you could have them in your data base. Let me know.

I think it should start your compressor. I also have a 7.5 hp compressor (with a true 7.5 hp/240v Marathon motor) . This is a big starting load on the generator for sure. But the 003 starts it with just change in pitch, moderate frequency sag and about two seconds of grey smoke before...
The parts manual pages 134-135 identifies the fuel lines to the corresponding cylinder. #1 is closest to the fan. That means Figure 7-5 is depicted wrong.
I hope there aren't too many more errors like this in the manual.
John
I am no longer confused. Page 134-135 in the parts manual identifies the fuel lines to the corresponding cylinder. #1 is in fact closest to the blower.
I guess illustration 7-5 is whack.
John
Yea, I hooked it up my 003a to my house via a 200amp manual transfer switch. My neighbor recently converted to electric heat and she gave me her 275 HHO tank which was 3/4 full. It is set up next to the 003. I topped it off, added a pump and treated it with PS Diesel Kleen and PS Biocide. I...
Jim,
Which cylinder is #1, the flywheel end or blower end?
Figure 7-5 shows #1 on the flywheel end and pages 7-38 and 7-40 say #1 is on the blower end (TM 5-6115-585-34)
John
Congrats on the 002. Where in Va are you?
The cap is vented so it won't affect the prime.
Btw, my throttle was a little sticky at first and it took me a minute or two to get it up to 60hz as the knob didn't want to move. Thankfully no harm was done.
John
Yes, that contradicts illustration 7-5 in the same manual. BTW, you have good eyes. I have read (skimmed thru) this several times, as people have said they read it but I never found it. I also believe Jimc (mep-003a teardown and refurb) in his first post refers to #1 as closest to the gen end...
You can also get the hose and fittings at DiscountHydraulicHose.com. They are cheap, reusable and very close to OEM
Hose: (R5-05 -- 1/4" SAE 100R5 Hydraulic Hose) http://www.discounthydraulichose.com/SAE_100R5_General_Purpose_Truck_Hose_p/r5-hose.htm
Fittings (R5-05-605 -- 1/4" Hose x 5/16"...
I have searched the manuals several times and cannot find a cylinder layout. However this illustration is the procedure for setting the timing mark on the flywheel and it shows setting up the dial indicator on #1 which is depicted on the flywheel end. I have read several post as saying the one...
Nice job getting it running. I noticed on your video that the oil pressure gauge looks to be pegged high.
Probably a good idea to keep an eye on it and see if it drops back after warming up and while loaded.

IF you go to GMG, they sell a used box ($429) http://greenmountaingenerators.com/product/mep002a-mep003a-used-distribution-box-nsn-6110-01-050-0654/ and a new box ($799) http://greenmountaingenerators.com/product/mep002a-mep003a-new-distribution-box-nsn-6110-01-050-0654/ for both the 002 and...
I know if the arm assembly separates from the ball joint (the 4th picture) that spring will pull the governor arm back towards the fan and the engine will go wide open (don't ask me how I know) I guess it could be possible that with the spring too high it is pulling the arm back allowing too...
You could have one problem that is causing both symptoms (run away and no stop). I think that the throttle linkage isn't connected properly at the governor assembly (FIGURE 41, pg. 132 in the parts manual). This is also connected to the stop solenoid. If the throttle assembly gets too loose...
