Read the three pages I posted above. Basically, they say that for deep mud, engage before you start out, and for fording they say start out in low first, and then engage.

Hi Dan,
My point is that unless someone told you, or you tried it, how would you know what would happen when you shifted into FWD with the wheels slipping and spinning?
A person that was raised driving manual transmissions, will be naturally very leery of shifting transmissions/transfer...
The only vehicle where I have gotten caught, wishing I was in AWD, with the front wheels stopped is a pickup truck... an empty pickup truck... which balances out to about the same relative axle weights. The rear wheels were indeed being driven, but the front wheels skidded to a stop in the snow...
I'm not quite sure what you are trying to say with that sentence, but common sense doesn't really apply here.
Over the years, there have been a large variety of different schemes used to handle the transfer case function. Some have simple dog clutches and should be shifted only when all wheels...
OK.
Everything, gear wise is constantly engaged, but when you shift to FWD, a dog clutch (#24) engages to couple power to the front drive shaft. If the speeds between the front drive shaft, and the rear drive shafts are equal, everything works nicely. If the drive shaft speeds are different...
Most of the time that is probably true, but consider this: The rear of the truck has 4 wheels on the ground, and as such has pretty good traction... especially if there is a load. If the front tires are skidding in some slime, and the rear wheels are rolling when you shift, you will grink the...
Yes, and no.
If all wheels have traction with the ground, then it is safe to shift into AWD at any speed.
If the rear wheels are spinning due to lack of traction, and the front wheels are rolling along the ground, you will grind the gears in the transfer case if you shift it into AWD.
If the...
Unlike most gasoline engines, all diesel engines have a governor. The governor does two main things: 1) it sets the maximum speed the engine can turn, and 2) it forces the engine to turn at a fixed speed, determined by the pedal position, regardless of load... in other words if the pedal is at...
That's just how it works. Someone offers you $20 on a $35 item that you are pretty firm on, make a counter offer of $36.
Carnac's prices may be spot on with the market, but until I unleash the cash in my wallet, the market price isn't yet set.
Although I couldn't pick Carnac out of a line up...
A flea market without haggling? That would be down right strange!
Open markets are historically all about haggling. They are a friendly competition between vendors and buyers that sets market prices.

I wanted to bring my deuce to the show, but at almost $5 per gallon for diesel, I couldn't justify the cost. I hope to have a supply of WMO "fuel additive" nailed down before next year.
I would say that Friday was typical of other years. There were lots of vendors.... prices were high, but...
I spent most of Friday wandering around the show and enjoying the sights. A stranger would never know that there was anyone from Steel Soldiers in attendance... you guys keep your screen names and affiliations very hidden.... but then I guess so did I...
Other than walking up to each person...
However, if it is capable of heating the air to improve burning in cold weather (when fed with hot water), it is equally capable of cooling the air.... IF... you feed it with cold water.
Perhaps the coolant passages could be rerouted so that the coolant jacket is fed by a separate water system...
The only reason I ever used the Power Service stuff was to cut the gel in the winter time....it really does... And through the Power Of Wishful Thinking (POWT), one always hopes that it will cleanup a set of dirty injectors; however, if it actually does it is a very small improvement.
It is...
Actually, Paul it would strongly appear that you are wrong. GL-5 is not adequately lubricating the 2nd gear's bearing when the truck is going fast in 5th gear. The gear has been modified a couple of times to improve things, as evidenced by the variety of differently designed gears found in...
Fording deep really isn't something you should do with a deuce on a regular basis. It isn't a submarine, but if you really needed to do it, the thought of braking an exhaust manifold probably isn't going to stop you. If I really had to take a deuce swimming deep, and with the kit, the water...
A standard part of routine diagnostics of the LD engines is running the engine at full governed speed. It is loud, but if your governor is functioning properly, and is adjusted properly (and it had better be if you are going to drive your truck) it shouldn't hurt anything.
Also, there are very...
