serious discussion of 5-ton speed increase via gearing (transmission, differential)

3000 per axle... good lord! Stock gears are 6.64 right? That's a 35% increase in ground speed at redline holding tire size equal, for ten grand. I'm almost certainly throwing some 395s on mine (~10% increase in ground speed) and if I can find an overdrive aux transmission for a decent price...

serious discussion of 5-ton speed increase via gearing (transmission, differential)

I see that ending badly if the suspension is ever used! rofl I like the "flip the axle around and switch the knuckles" idea, but wouldn't it require shimming the axle housing excessively to fix the resulting inverted caster? I don't know Rockwells all that well but my suspicion is that the...

    Eye Safety

yeah, just the thought of a piece of a wire wheel scares the bajeezus out of me. I took one of those wires in the side of the thigh a while ago when the wheel snagged on something and it stabbed about 1/8" in, after going through my jeans. Weld spatter... :!: man that must really suck. I did...

International Title Service --- A+ SERVICE!

A friend of mine registered his Jeep Cherokee buggy project through VT, so that makes sense to me. As long as the VIN is not listed as stolen and everything checks out they will issue title etc. He does have property in VT however so he did not need to go through anyone to get it handled, just...

International Title Service --- A+ SERVICE!

yikes, their site is still up (go figure) I was about to send money off to these guys... glad I read the whole thread!

serious discussion of 5-ton speed increase via gearing (transmission, differential)

hmmm... that interests me greatly! Any idea where one would procure such a transmission? Guess if I do something like that, I'll have to figure out how to air-shift the T138, since I don't think it will do very well at all with an overdrive on only the rear wheels with the sprag shift setup...

serious discussion of 5-ton speed increase via gearing (transmission, differential)

You are missing something in your line of reasoning. The brakes for these trucks were designed to stop well enough (not great, but well enough) with five to ten tons of cargo. Going ~30% faster is not going to be as difficult to stop as that - 30% faster = 70% more kinetic energy, ten tons of...

DOD Special Agent wants to see my truck

Also interested, unless it really only gets important to exporters... I have no intention of selling my truck, but is there anything I'm supposed to do since I bought it from a private party? Am I supposed to effectively say "hey guys, I bought this truck with this serial number, just so ya...

serious discussion of 5-ton speed increase via gearing (transmission, differential)

Custom gears are going to run you a *lot* unfortunately :( I would say that a transmission with more speeds would be the answer, however. Regearing the axles, or replacing the tires, is going to increase the top speed sure, but it will also lug the engine more in the lower gears, all it does...

    Injector fuel return/supply line?

Yep, I'm used to those ferrules and such... basically the same ones that get used on icemaker plumbing, right? I guess I will check P&S Trucks and Parts when I go there to see what they have in stock for 10 lug wheels and takeoff tires. Thanks!

    MV security

I disconnect the negative battery terminal and drop it down into the bottom of the battery box, pull the fuel cutoff and latch it in place, and park it with the exhaust facing my bedroom window. If anyone tries to steal it, I will know - gotta love straight pipes. I will likely add a steering...

    Injector fuel return/supply line?

Specs: M54A2, LDT-465 engine (non thick deck) etc etc In doing my head gasket job on the M54A2 I managed to kink the plastic line running between two of the fuel injectors. It appears to be regular 1/4" plastic hose of some sort, anyone know what kind/where to buy it? I would use vinyl but...

    Battery Safety

Good lord, that must have hurt. That is one of the reasons I stopped wearing my college class ring when I really started working on my vehicles frequently, just seemed like a bad idea wearing a conductive object that could easily snag on a moving part as well. I voted "trying to move past the...

    Eye Safety

definitely, I was practicing it religiously behind my polycarb eyeglasses when I got nailed the first time rofl I don't really like the "birth control goggle" style ones, I prefer a good set of wraparound safety glasses under a face shield plus careful angling of the tool.

    Eye Safety

Same here. Wear safety glasses or goggles and a face shield and you are pretty much good to go. January 2nd, 2010 saw me in the ER with a microscopic fleck of metal 30% of the way through my right cornea. It got there on Dec 31 while I was working on a new front axle for my Cherokee. I was...

    Political Messages on your MV

Assuming my home purchase goes through, I think my neighbors will be fairly OK with it, except possibly the house directly downhill from the place. I saw several lifted vehicles within a block and a semi tractor or two, as well as a few obvious project vehicles. I still have no intent of...

    Lets See Your 5-Ton!

first of all, looks awesome! Second - when you got it was it titled as a '64 A2? Was it built as an A2 or converted? If not, did you by any chance convince the wonderful state-o-mass to retitle it as a '64, or do you just know it was actually made in '64? I'm hoping to get them to retitle...

    Yet another blown head gasket

Speaking of injectors - related problem. My injectors all came out nice and easy except for cylinder 4 and 6. 4 came out pretty easily but 6 was heavily carbon crusted, probably from incomplete/lousy combustion resulting from compression leakage before the gasket failed catastrophically. I...

    Yet another blown head gasket

Using the new style was the right thing to do. I wish I got the new style as replacements. Mine was subjected to EXTREMELY harsh treatment accidentally. I drove the truck 550 miles home the weekend I bought it (Brownsville PA to Worcester MA, by way of Tremont PA) and on the pass from...
