The 10 bolt fronts do better than the 10 bolt rears for longevity. The rear axles have been know to go out just driving on the street with stock size tires. But they were probably being abused. Towing cars will fall under the abused category. The gov-loc is affectionately referred to as a...
Even with the hubs unlocked, the driveshaft still turns. There is enough parasitic drag with the friction to cause this. It cannot impart high loads like having the hubs locked though and you still don't need to remove the front driveline. If the shaft turns, it will turn the chain that will...
It depends on condition and your bank account. There is no one price anyone can give you. Just bid what your comfortable spending on an auction and see how it goes.
Don't try to use a 2wd case... the bellhousing is different between 2wd (non K-case) and 4x4 models (K-case). The thick aluminum dust cover with braces running to the motor mounts will not work on a 2wd TH400.
Around here $100-150 will buy a complete TH400 K-case core. $85 if you go to the...
And nothing really changed in the NP205 when they changed the gear lube specs. I've run ATF in an older NP205 and it did tend to leak more than 80w/90 gear oil though.
I have a stock 700r4 wiring setup I pulled out of my K20 when I converted to a TH400... Including the IP pump switch that replaces the vacuum switch on the TH400. Pay shipping and you can have it.
EDIT: please don't PM me about these parts anymore. They are long gone now.
Replace your transmission and motor mounts when you put it back together. Be sure to use the brace that runs from the tcase to the bellhousing. Also, make sure your driveshafts are not too long. If the front shaft bottoms out, it will actually will pry back on your tranny/tcase connection with...
That is a fairly common failure in trucks that are worked hard off-road. The weight of the tcase hanging off of the back without a brace back up to the bellhousing is usually the cause.
It is just a conversion joint. You can pull the old one out and bring it in with you and the dimensions will be all they need to get you the right one.
