They guy I purchased it from swears its an 817 but looking at the TM's, it looks like a 51.

Originally I thought so also but he swapped fenders and air cleaner.

I'm looking at the operating tm's and looks like the M51A2 has a transfer pump to move fuel from the right to left tank and the 817 just switches which tank fuel comes from (with a switch between the driver door and seat). If that's the case, I have a M51.

Yep, its got the multifuel.

Still not sure if this thing is a m51A2 or an m817. Its got the M51A2 nose and engine but the prior owner says his buddy swapped motors and replaced the nose, hood and fenders. I can't make out the data plate on the dash.

What kind of license did you get?

I'll be going to the DMV today to hear for myself. I'll post what I find out.
