    MEP-831a Troubleshooting

I'd say the running gap is around 5/16" with the engine running. The large gap I saw previously must have been the unit trying to shut down because of the low oil pressure. The engine is holding a very stable rpm and does speed up when a load is applied. My multi meter won't allow me to read...

    MEP-831a Troubleshooting

Interestingly that manual is significantly similar to the manual that I have, but it's arranged differently. In my manual the actuator maintenance starts on page 4-42 (don't know why another section refers you to somebody else) and in your manual it starts on page 19-1. The data is the same...

    MEP-831a Troubleshooting

Got the generator head back together today. I couldn't get the mylar trick to work. After 7 tries I ended up using a couple feeler gauges to get the gap between the stator and rotor. The plastic sheets were getting bunched up when I tried to remove them and I'd have to pull the rotor to...

MEP 831 FAQ for owners or potential buyers

Maybe my post wasn't clear, I was trying to answer the question regarding the acceptable plastic thickness. Per the manual, it could be as thick as .010". I then expanded the answer as I can't see using a steel feeler because I don't know if one can withdraw it. Maybe if the feeler was brass...

MEP 831 FAQ for owners or potential buyers

See page 284 of the TM for more instructions, but it says to use a feeler gauge of .010 inch thickness to check for clearance between the stator and rotor. Honestly, I'm pretty sure the clearance will be OK on it's own. I'm not certain you'll be able to recover a steel feeler gauge.

    MEP-831a Troubleshooting

Well, I got the oil pressure issued traced back to a pinch o-ring at the oil filter. When replacing the filter be careful to not pinch the o-ring. I have to reassemble the generator, but this won't take too long. This means I'll be needing to adjust the throttle in the near future. Do you...

MEP 831 FAQ for owners or potential buyers

So, whomever tried to work on my engine attempted to remove the oil filter without removing the retaining bolt. Doesn't surprise me because they made a mess of everything else they touched. When they did this they jacked up the oil filter so I decided to replace it. I didn't realize the...

    MEP-831a Troubleshooting

I have a much, much larger gap than that. Ok, so I'm going to guess that my govenor is also out of adjustment and that it's trying to shut the engine down due to low oil pressure.

    MEP-831a Troubleshooting

Well, I got mine running today. Didn't take much to get it to fire, but I have a slight problem... no oil pressure. I pulled the oil pressure switch and I'm not getting oil out of the port. F$%&! I have a pretty good external oil seep that I can't seem to locate so I'm not sure I want to try...

    Opinions on MEP-831A

If anybody has a simular document for the 831 I'd greatly appreciate a copy. My unit got dinged in transit and I'm trying to make a insurance claim. To process the claim they want a invoice showing the value of the unit. I'd rather not use the GL invoice because the value is too close to the...

    Opinions on MEP-831A

Does anybody know the original purchase value of the MEP-831a? Most of these units being listed don't have the NSN information filled out. If your unit was sold with the NSN info, can you forward a copy of the page to me?

The fitting turned out to be a 5/16" JIC which I believe is comparable to a -5 AN. I used a 1/4" hose with pushlock fittings.

I was just reading a website that said JIC (37) and AN were the same. Guess you both are winners?

Does anybody know what the fitting is for the remote fuel connection? I can't tell if it's JIC, AN or Flare.

Well, my engine parts are on order. Nothing is in stock, so it'll be a week or two. Even with a long list, the parts only came to $127, so I'm very happy with that. Did fill the engine with oil last week and now the enclosure has a bunch of oil in it. My wife noticed that the oil filter tab...

Huh? The only three units on GL havn't started so he has to be talking about the units we bid on. Unless I'm mistaken, those auctions are over.

Can you post a link to the listing for your unit? I think I figured out an option for a 24 volt battery that'll cost around $100. Once I have something definitive, I'll post it for others.

MEP 831 FAQ for owners or potential buyers

Here is the Yanmar parts manual. This manual is specific to this exact engine model. It even includes the the correct grid heaters and the oil assist plug.

Ok, can anybody suggest a source for parts? It appears the focus is on the older generators that have been on the market and there just isn't much demand for the 831.

MEP 831 FAQ for owners or potential buyers

It's nearly impossible to get a picture of the engine serial number because it's under the muffler. Because I have my engine torn apart, I was barely able to get a pic of the plate. To order any parts from a Yanmar dealer, you'll need the model and serial number.
