That's beautiful work, Tom. Are the needle bearings captive in the cages? I see 4 big holes in the gear disk and one in the hub. Do you also drill 4 in the hub?
Thanks for the comments on the design so far. I am not a mechanical designer, I hope for more comments. Maybe someone runnig XLs or super singles and not using the normal spare mount will eventually design and build up such a mount. A "davit" it is called?
I was 'triangulating', which is about...
I think I like the idea of a swing-out mount. Less change of an accident while raising or lowering the gate.
If it were made with a bracket that let the gate take much of the weight when the tire was stowed, the mount could be made more simple and would not have to stress the side of the truck...
G.,
The set is rather large size since it is a diesel. It consumes the space. Even if it were higher by a few inches (and therefore difficult to service) there would be no room for a tire. I could have put a little gasser there, but then would have had to add another fuel tank and I would...
It's possible that I might go to the big XL tires.
plusses: lower engine RPMs.
neutrals: truck height goes from 144 inches to 146.25 inches (based on DM96's measurement of his ground to axle center of 22.75 with the XL's versus 20.5" for 11.00x20's).
minuses: oops.. now I "must" carry a big...
Don't pitch it. If you can remove the cable without ruining the box, good.. but anything original like that could be useful, depending how it does the conversion. If nothing else, someone might appreciate the electronic parts inside. Can you open it and show the guts in a picture or two?
Does anyone have a spare pulley for the 60-amp alternator of the M35? Do I need a key on the shaft? I should really think about replacing the one ADR and I 'fixed' over a year ago and repairing it. Can anyone suggest a shop in Dallas that could handle the 60-amp alternator's repairs?
If you are going to do that, then consider also adding a 1uF metalized polyester capacitor in parallel. Best to avoid an electrolytic in the engine compartment if possible, they don't like heat.
If it didn't have so many 'blocks' I'd say it's a simple capacitor. Could it be that it is a parallel combination of them? How about a picture and also say what ends went where? That would be cool.
The only thing I have ever seen more than two of those alternators on was a suburban with a 5000 watt bootleg CB radio setup. He had to give it some gas when he keyed up..
