After a day spent on another project, I mounted the wheel onto the truck. I actually mounted it twice because the first time I had the hollow stud too far away from the CTIS valve. I'm going to try not to do that again! I learned that the hollow stud needs to be one stud CW from the CTIS...
It just occurred to me that I got @tobyS confused with @fuzzytoaster , which I realized when tobyS' signature line mentioned the 4x4 A3 :p Navy A3s are news to me, but I'm still an A3 newbie :p
There's a Mission BBQ that's going to open soon in Henrietta, NY, and they have an M35A3 parked...
That's pretty awesome! What are the truck S/Ns? I'm curious how late in production they were built and if other Navy A3s were built in the same run.
The issues with the AT1545 are well-documented around the forum. The main issue has to do with the control pistons (I think) that control 4th...
The lettering on the bumper looks like it's on a brighter-colored background, which I think was a NATO requirement for trucks operating in different countries so they could be easily identified. I'm not sure if that's standard though since my A3 has that, but then again I don't know for sure if...
I just remembered that the gauge I've been checking it with reads a little lower than the one I fill with. I'll give it another day and see how it goes (y)
I inflated the tire last night using truck air from the emergency gladhand. I bought a longer hose to go between my pressure gauge and air chuck since the wheel TM recommended that I stand at least 10 feet off to the side from the tire in case the rim explodes.
It's also suggested that the...
I have the wheel bolted together and the CTIS valve piped in! It took a lot of wrenching but got the clamp ring torqued down. Here's what I did:
Very first thing: I made sure the o-ring flange on the rim was clean.
1) I installed the rim using a @simp5782 method where I leaned the tire...
I've discovered in my wheel work so far that the wheel weights are mounted inconsistently, and the TM doesn't help much either. On some wheels they're on the 3rd stud CCW from the air pipe, and on some wheels they're on the 4th stud CCW from the air pipe.
I took a closer look at the TM wheel...
I think I see why there might be confusion over the torque values for the bead lock (or clamp ring, as the tire TM calls it). The M939A1 clamp rings only require at most 250 ft-lbs of torque per lock nut, which is almost half that required for the M35A3 rim clamp ring o_O
I'm ready to screw on my new rim nuts. What I'm about to ask is probably as bad as religion or politics: Is never seize recommended for the rim nut installation? TM doesn't mention otherwise. I'd think it wouldn't be as big an issue with these distorted thread nuts, but I'm an amateur when it...
It seems compared to the A2 rims, the A3 rims are less robust. Each rim has a load capacity of 4000 lbs, which is much less than the tires. One probably shouldn't load 5 tons of stuff in the back of an M35A3 with these rims like the A2. That said, the rims on the front end are already...
Thanks @rtk ! I hope we'll some day get our trucks to meet at a show :)
Brake drum cleaned and painted! I didn't care much about the paint overspray as long as the hubcap was black to match the rim. I painted the hub green to match what it looked like when I took the wheel off.
I used two...
In the process of assembling the wheel! I started by installing the truck's stock bead lock in the new tire. To do this, I used:
Ratchet strap, 1000 lb capacity (~$8 at Harbor Freight)
4-ton bottle jack
A knee and composite-toe boots
I tried a couple big prybars to help squeeze the bead...
Well there goes that idea :p While that Wix filter is "low CFM", would it be enough CFM? I just want the truck to perform to spec, not be a race car. Maybe I need to give the Cat dealer a call and see what they have to say for air flow requirements.
I guess I'm just lucky so far. I broke the bead on the bead lock using just a pair of 36" pry bars. I then flipped the wheel upside down on a couple cubes of wood and worked the rest of the tire off the rim the same way, using gravity to my advantage :)
Question about torquing the grommet: I'm using a clicky-style torque wrench to do it. I torqued it to 60 ft-lbs, then double-checked it, which resulted in tightening it further, probably because of grommet squish. Should I just torque it once, or do it until I get 60 ft-lbs without further...
