If you get some that have the thin red silicone bead on them, they go bead side to the block. Only 1 of those type in the stack up per box. If the stack you get is a couple of thousandths thicker, no big deal, the shims will compress a bit.
Your best bet is to leave it alone. The overflow valve is a very common item that fails. I'm sure that after you install it, you will notice a bit of a difference.
