No, but the TM outlines it. Pull the check plugs on them. All should be a knuckle below the fill port. If memory serves, they're all 1/2" drive.

Base gasket would work just like the cartridge filter. The instructions are pretty simple, just swap that in place of the canister/filter with the bolt and torque to 25-35ft-lbs. Then spin on your new filter.

The fan is temp controlled. But there's a chance the pneumatic switch never engaged it. I'm just a little confused about the coolant being low. So coolant has remained at level after that first fill? There's only a hand full of ways what we see can happen. Ring/piston/cyl wall damage...

That's excessive in my view. I'd be concerned with a ring issue.
