    Magnetic Start Relay

Yes, the relay could have welded its contacts together or have corrosion/whatever keeping the contactor disc from retracting away from the contacts. A quick ohmmeter test should answer the question.

    Zenith Mechanovac Governor

I had forgotten about those! I worked on a church (school) bus that had one on the IH gasser engine back in the '90s. The bus dated from the early '70s as I vaguely remember. Fun times. I haven't seen a gasoline powered school bus in years, but they all had these governors on them as well...

    Detroit 2-71

There was a thread on listerengine.com about the 1-71 DD generators bought by the Navy before WWII. There aren't many of them out there. If you look on youtube, at least one guy has uploaded some videos of his restored 1-71 generator. Back to the 2-71s, they are great engines, and great...

    Battery Tenders

Rotating makes no difference at all. Consider the circuit diagram symbol for a battery (below). Note that all the cells (nominal 2.0 volts) are in a string together. Our pictured example is a 10 Volt battery if we assume those are lead-acid cells. Because they're in a string together, if a...

    waste thinner for fuel?

Thinner into WMO or WVO would probably work really well as a viscosity adjuster. I think I'd be careful about too much thinner with high outdoor temps-explosion hazard in the tank - so save the stuff up until fall, then use it to thin your too-heavy fuel. Likewise, avoid adjusting the...

    Detroit 2-71

They do make good generators, but they do not tolerate light loads well.

    MEP-002A Aux fuel pump

You should be able to short the appropriate pins on the cable that plugs into the float switch and get the pump to run. If it's a problem with the float or switch, that'll isolate it.

    100 mile road trip

It's probably also worth mentioning that pressurized lubrication doesn't mean what it used to mean. Back in the day, 5 PSI to the main bearings at idle was regarded as sufficient. Supply volumes have gradually crept up as engineers had to deal with lower maximum weights and higher area...

    What should a MEP-002a / MEP-003a be worth?

I was planning on trenching and using conduit, thanks in large part to posts I'd read here over the last year! See - there are people who know how to use search... But that said, the wire is still going to be below grade in a wooded area and I want to use something like UF or USE to get it to...

    Something hinky on GL today

No, but alt-printscreen probably does. And it saves you cropping the rest of your desktop out of the pic with mspaint no matter what size your desktop and browser are sized to...

    What should a MEP-002a / MEP-003a be worth?

I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that I paid less than $600 for a running condition 1000 hour MEP-002A from an auction late last fall. As far as I can tell, everything works on it (haven't tested the aux lift pump yet). OTOH, I had a friend who cruises GL all the time and is a frequent...

    GL-1 Gear Oil Alternative

This is a completely different problem from insufficient lubrication. Incidentally, the common fix for transmissions that require GL-2 or later (EP) oils and have weak synchros or poor synchronizer action is to switch to synthetic GL-5. It has a lower viscosity at rest which tends to help the...

    Info on Diesel Fuels

I doubt new/used would make much difference in this application. Motor oils a) never have much in the way of EP additives anyway, b) don't have viscosity breakdown anymore until well past the change interval, and c) don't really alter chemistry in any significant way up to the change interval...

    Info on Diesel Fuels

As I think about the 'what to do?' question, I think the answer is pretty straightforward - spike your pump diesel with some biodiesel. That test report showed the most wear reduction from spiking ULSD with plain old biodiesel. It's cheap and can generally be found. Why mess with anything else?

    Info on Diesel Fuels

The problem is that 'sulfur' in diesel fuel and 'lead' in gasoline aren't the sulfur and lead that you're thinking of any more than air is oxygen. Yes, many Arabian crudes are high sulfur. But pure sulfur isn't soluble in oil (or water) just as pure lead isn't soluble in gasoline. This...

    Deuce idle time question

Seems like wet stacking plus weep hole equals fire hazard wherever it drips. It would fix the condensate in the pipe problem, though. Frankly, the best solution would be to load the engine down more. Even at idle you might get the EGT up high enough burn off crap if you could put more load on...

    Aircraft tug

From before my time. By the '70s those were all replaced with tugs that look very much like a large airport has. All those windows make a lot of sense for checking status of the tow bar and tow and for backing. I bet they begged for air conditioning, though - it's always pretty hot on the...

    MEP-002 problems

Congratulations - You'll be very happy to have this handy beast sooner or later. I'm already paying attention to ads for cheap 3 phase welders... One question for Speddmon - If the thing doesn't know if there's B+ or not, why did mine shut down when the jumper cables came loose during one test...

    Best Engine Oil?

old, low-tech engines (like your m35 gasser) pretty much expect oil in the crankcase. Not much more than that is required. Modern tribology didn't exist when that engine was designed. Meet the viscosity requirements and change at the recommended interval.
