    M1008 Starter problems

Hey all, I have a 1986 CUCV M1008 with the original 6.2 with original 24v system. Long post, you can probably skip down to the section with 👉 below. I had to replace the starter about 4 or 5 years ago with a remanufactured one. I think its what everyone calls the "direct drive" model, but I...

Shift Indicator... and OEM (NOT dorman) headlight adjusters

Actually these will work either way. I tested them before I put the dash back in. All the other lights work fine. The temp light works, as it is off before you start the truck. Then it is off or really dim, but gets brighter as the engine warms up until its fully lit.

Yeah, I think thats where this current temp gauge sending unit is at. But the idiot light isn't working or... something. The truck runs fine, haven't had any overheating problems. Have ran temp checks using a infrared thermometer, everything looks good. I might replace the sending unit, but...

Shift Indicator... and OEM (NOT dorman) headlight adjusters

I checked the wires to the temp sending unit and the glow plug right next to it. I ha repaired the connector on both of those wires. Neither of them has the original plastic cover, but after I repaired the wires I covered the end with shrink tubing. In any case, I switched the wires around just...

Shift Indicator... and OEM (NOT dorman) headlight adjusters

lol, I hope I didn't do something like that... but knowing me, I'll have to check. Thanks for the location, just didn't have time to look for it this evening as it was getting late. Will check it tomorrow.

Shift Indicator... and OEM (NOT dorman) headlight adjusters

Ok, well I cold started the truck today, and the temp light was off. As the truck warmed up a bit, the temp light lit and slowly got brighter. Let the truck idle for a bit and tested for exhaust gas in the coolant system, nothing. Used an infrared thermometer, cooling pipes near thermostat was...

Shift Indicator... and OEM (NOT dorman) headlight adjusters

UPDATE... and a new question... We have had some bad weather, a lot of rain, some snow and just plain cold. Days I just didn't want to bother working outside in. But I finally got to finish up on the dash lights 2 days ago, it was a pill getting it all to fit. But after a few mods to the dash...

Shift Indicator... and OEM (NOT dorman) headlight adjusters

yeah, hadn't thought about grinding down a socket for some reason . Will have make one once I know I got it set right (after test driving it), so I can make sure that bolt is tight. Thanks

Shift Indicator... and OEM (NOT dorman) headlight adjusters

ok, well... I got the instrument cluster mounted back into the dash the best it has ever fit. Just took me about pulling it back out about 3 times to get this far. Even the tab that I repaired aligned right up with the screw mount clip and alignment post. I did end up reinforcing that tab some...

Shift Indicator... and OEM (NOT dorman) headlight adjusters

Ok, I got a question about the instrument cluster. I have taken this thing apart before and have always had a real pain trying to get the parts to align and fit back into the dash. Does the.... back base part?... look to be the correct one? I am suspecting that the shop I bought this truck from...

Shift Indicator... and OEM (NOT dorman) headlight adjusters

I adjusted the fuel injection pump. Was pretty straight forward like you stated, except for the bolt on the bottom right (when looking down at the engine from the front) is a really pain to get to and actually turn. Tried every type of a wrench and socket I had, just not much room to move the...

Shift Indicator... and OEM (NOT dorman) headlight adjusters

Ok, that's what I was thinking from your previous reply. Only diesel I've ever had with a mechanical injection pump, never had a thought about needing to time it before. Will have to get my TM out and look it up, but sounds fairly straight forward from what you stated.

Shift Indicator... and OEM (NOT dorman) headlight adjusters

Ok, I know what you're talking about now. Hadn't thought about that, You might very well be right. I'll have to check it and see. Could the pump timing change over time (no pun intended) for some reason? Wear??

Are you talking about the solenoid that attaches to the vacuum line going to the transmission?

Shift Indicator... and OEM (NOT dorman) headlight adjusters

yep, good tip. I forgot about that with led bulbs. Had this truck for over 10 years now, been a good truck. But wanted to do some small upgrades for night driving. Along with a few other repairs/upgrades.... at least that's how it starts. Already did some work on it this summer, replaced tie...

Shift Indicator... and OEM (NOT dorman) headlight adjusters

what are the "lens covers" over the oil, 4x4, and gen lights called? LMC doesn't seem to carry them, as they don't show them in any of the diagrams. And I can't even find anything when searching on google. So I'm guessing I'm not using the "right term". Need some replacements if at all possible...

Shift Indicator... and OEM (NOT dorman) headlight adjusters

OH OK, I get what you're talking about now. Didn't realize that previously. I'll have to look at these closer, guess I'm glad I didn't get the headlights in already. My problem with the adjusters was the plastic pieces wouldn't hold into the rad support. So the adjustment screw was just...

Shift Indicator... and OEM (NOT dorman) headlight adjusters

yeah, they have two different styles for the 3 speeds. but they work/position differently. LoL  I only question it when it seems like the engine keeps revving to high for too long. Does this when driving through the little local town mostly, be doing 25 and sounds like I'm trying to...

Shift Indicator... and OEM (NOT dorman) headlight adjusters

I thought about that, will have to see a way of holding a nut into the rad support while still being able to adjust the screw. Will have to look at the indicator... now that you mention it I do remember something about a screw, can't remember if its just something I read a long time ago, or...

Shift Indicator... and OEM (NOT dorman) headlight adjusters

yeah, I just need some new adjusters and the clips they screw into. I cleaned and repainted the headlight buckets. The rad support is in pretty good shape, still good paint.
