What do you plan to do with your M109? Does it have a turbo? Many M109A3s (like mine) came without. I guess they decided that shop vans were REMF trucks.
There are lots of posts on this website about fixing the box up. Learn how to do a search and you will see a lot of good ideas.
In the 15th Combat Engineers we had a 40mm grenade launcher off of a crashed Cobra we helped secure (blow up) mounted on the back of an M151. We put a crank where the motor mounted and away we went 'til the Provost Marshal spotted it.
We mounted it the wheelwell all the way to the back. It...
A wild shot, but maybe you were hearing the same thing I was when I drove my M923A1 from Ft. Benning, GA to Ft. Worth, TX. The noise would start in at about 45, or 50 MPH and slack off at 55. It was definitely coming from behind me and sounded like something was ripping itself apart. I pulled...
Several years ago I bought a "scrap” M101A1 that was missing the tongue, lunette and various wheel parts. I wanted it to use the same spare as the vehicle I would be towing it with, a ’69 Ford Bronco with 5 on 5 ½ lugs, so I cut the spindles off right behind the backing plate and welded on front...
!!!!
I struggled with my M109 after I let it run out of fuel. I went cheap and put on an inline pump ($75 instead of $220) and it still wouldn't run right. Finally I put on a brand new in-tank pump from Olympic and a lot of problems went away.
You can get pull-out pumps, and they are better...
Thanks. I'm a little confused about the ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid?). Do you add it to the fuel? How much in a full tank?
I drove my truck from GA to TX and didn't identify any problems. However, after driving a non-turbo duece, I was expecting a little more power. I don't have anything...
In the middle of a downpour (probably nothing like you have in HI) I measured the length of my box. It is 12' 6" long, 9" longer than your shortened bed. Looks doable.
I was thinking about changing my 11.00 R20s to 14s, but now I think not. The 14s are on bead-lock rims and can't be dueled up...
INSPIRING!! You do nice work and all of your forethought shows.
I have an M109A2 (my current avatar) and am planning a trip to Texas to bring back an M923A1. My plans are to bob the M923 and move the box from the M109 to it. Your photos answered several of my questions such as how to handle...
That's one of the best looking 900's I've seen. Don't sweat the "start and run with a jump". Most of these trucks have sat for as long as a year. You will find 4 BIG batteries under the passenger seat. You only need 2 to jump it. If you are lucky GL will come over and jump it for you.
Last year at thanksgiving time my wife and I picked up a “Vehicle does not run” M923A1 in Ft. Benning GA. All it needed (in GA) was a jump start and tires pumped up. In under an hour we were headed for Colorado, via Texas.
In Jackson, MS it threw a water pump belt. Thanks to a cell phone...
Lots of good GL trucks don't run when you go to pick it up. If you buy the truck, and I think you probably should, go on this forum and download all the TMs you can and read them. Pay attention to daily maintenance and perform ALL of it before you pull it out of the GL lot. If you have never...
Check it over for signs of leaks before your ride and after. There should be none. Many of these trucks have low mileage but they are old and that means that anything made of rubber, like seals and brake cylinder parts, could be bad. Expect to replace a lot of this stuff if you keep the truck a...
Careful, engine transplants in the old Dodge 3/4 tons, military or civilian, have one problem, the axles are too weak for big horsepower. Believe it or not, the one that most often breaks is the long axle in the rear.
I haven't been following event schedules, when would all this happen?
I'm in Colorado, but will be going to TX in Nov to bring back an M923. Maybe someone could drop one off at the side of the road as they pass through, that is if I can afford it. I just got back to work after an unexpected...
Great info in this thread! Maybe if I can get my wife to read it, she'll be happier with my ideas.
I have a '66 M109 with a non-turbo engine and it is sick, sick, sick at this altitude (5280) and I won’t even think about taking it to 10,000 ft. Instead I am planning to move the box to the...
