I found a great replacement mirror head for my busted up side mirrors. I don’t have the west coast style but I think these actually look better for a soon to be bobbed deuce. They were a cheap replacement from Amazon but are stainless.
Update…
I got the new in tank pump swapped into the freshly cleaned fuel tank. Replaced all 3 fuel filters last week so it was just a matter of fresh fuel and bleeding the filters this weekend. I got it to start but still only on ether. Drove it up to the shop and installed the freshly cleaned...
No worries! It’s more work but I think I’ll still switch them based on what I’ve seen. Thank you for the info. Plus, I plan to drive the A2 more so the bigger window would be nice.
Barrman, I know it’s an old thread but I know you’re still active. What can you tell me about the early hard tops? I have a 53 M35 REO gasser with a 1968 manufactured hard top that has the sliding rear window. I also have a 78 M35A2C with a hardtop that has the smaller solid rear window. I...
What started as a transmission swap from the old 3052 to the 3053A turned into a full clutch, pressure plate and flywheel machined job. Since I was waiting on parts I figured I’d fix the rear seal leak. Well…. On the REO 331 you have to pull the oil pan to remove the rear seal carrier. So then...
I followed you but it ran without the surge Sunday afternoon and then died so I wasn’t able to see if the fuel control was moving and causing the issue. Once I get it running again I’ll have to reassess. Thanks for the suggestion!
Yes, the fuel control was stuck. I got back to the shop today. The deuce started (with ether) and idled perfectly. It ran for about 45 seconds, slowed down and then died. I worked on the in tank pump which was bypassed with an inline pump. The connection was corroded and fuse missing in the...

This is what it does once it starts. It’s not happy but I feel it’s worth putting money into at this point. I didn’t even know if the engine was sound but it was making air and oil pressure.
Cattlerepairman,
It won’t start without ether so I guess I’ll call that hard starting. I didn’t mention that I just purchased it last week. It’s still partially disassembled (fan, rad and grille are off) from when the IP work was done those 6ish years ago, so I’ve only ran it twice for 30 sec or...
In addition to my 1953 M35 gasser, I now own a 1978 M35A2C. The story is it sat 6 or 7 years after it drove to where it was sitting. The PO said it sat a few weeks and then wouldn’t start. He had the IP off and replaced the hydraulic head because it was stuck. Once it started it had a huge idle...
What pressure plate did you end up using? I have a replacement disc but cant source the pressure plate for my M35 gasser. Hopefully you are still getting notifications for the thread.
I remember the VW days too. I completely agree with you on all of that. When people ask my opinion of the K&N filter, my usual response is, “If it allows more airflow, it’s because it’s not filtering as much”. Simple as that. My deuce won’t see more than probably 250 miles a year (if that) so...
I never completely disassembled the canister, but I did change the oil and clean the base. I’ve read a study that Ford motor company published sometime in the 50s I think. It describes the restrictive nature and accelerated engine wear associated with oil bath air systems. I was eliminating it...
The old rubber elbow hose was pretty hard so I don’t think it was that. I didn’t take the air cleaner apart other than to dump the oil out. It ran like a champ today in the Independence Day parade so it sure helped. I know it looks a little goofy but it was actually parts they had in stock...
It’s been awhile but I did a mod to the deuce just to see if it helped. I had a big problem with hot restarts and it always felt like the engine was restricted. I went to Advance and bought a universal cold air kit. I made the filter mount and turned the aluminum carb hat forward. It was still...
check out https://www.olsonsgaskets.com/ They have gaskets for the 331. The 331 isn't listed on their website that I could find but they sent me a list of whats available. I need to reseal mine but I hate to even take it apart. I have a new exhaust leak since the July parade and what I think is...
The white tarp worked out great. I also posted a video on the Facebook group. With the tarp completely spread open and banging over the sides some, it was trapping a lot of exhaust fumes. I turned under the sides so the corner grommets lined up with the next one over basically doubling the...
That's brilliant! Feel free to hijack, especially with pertinent info. I raised my bows 14" by simply cutting some 1x4s and dropping them into the pocket. The bows didnt seem to want to come out while driving but i also have bungee straps attached to the bed side and bow. I'll likely bolt...
I don’t need anything else leaky! I park it on a rock pad and I can still see where it sits once I move it. Gasser gaskets and seals are not easy to come by and I figure is extra rust proofing!
