I hope to have found & corrected any potential problems in the transfer case this last weekend.
Ordered and changed out the speedo cable, and while checking things with the engine running and the transmission cover open, found that the transfer shift air valves on top of the transmission were...
Local Kit
Just bought a unit for the new truck this morning. Most of the flame heater parts were removed so I thought that an ether kit would be the way to go. Cost $80+/- without can. This is for a cable unit with the nozzle. Be sure that the e-bay kits include the nozzle, tubing and the...
My copy of the lube manual references 10 weight motor oil for the hydraulic, and is in conflict about the Ross gear box. One place says gear oil and another says 10 weight. I used gear oil.
I would be surprised if Towman's truck has 10.26 gears. All the info I have read says that the M139's used with the Honest John Launcher system are the only 5 tons with this low ratio. If this were the case his figured top speed would only be about 40-45 mph @ 2800 rpm using 1400x20 tires.
I also like the gear ratios much better in the gear box. The OD box has a big hole 2nd to 3rd that even with the M812A1 empty is noticeable. I can start out empty in 2nd with the gasser water truck which must weigh at least as much as the M812A1, while the OD box bothers, again even with the...
Oil filter
Answered my own question on the oil filter adapter. Looked at a WIX master catalog today, and they do offer an adapter that bolts directly in place of the can filter to use a 51970 spin on filter. The # is 24067 and it requires a different bolt (not included) based on the...
Gassers!!
While the 800 series trucks seem to go better (read more torque) I still like gassers. This M52 should be able to do close to 70 mph with these tires, based on a 2800-3000 rpm redline. Should cruise empty at 60 easy.
Now that I have had the weekend to look over the truck, a number of small items/issues have come to light:
1) The entire hot start flame heater system is missing, with the intake just plugged off and the cab switches left in the panel, but disconnected. Any suggestions? or should we just...
For chevy43: In NH, the max width without permits is 8'-6" (102"). We would have to cut off or remove over 33" to make this. On the M135 water truck, the tank was just 102" and we flipped the hubs and run singles to meet the width requirements.
For cranetruck: It's looking more and more...
More info
For M1075: pictures of data plate.
For Towman2277: our other sister truck to the water truck is a M139 with a M328 bed on it. It's data plate like the water truck is marked M139, but all the parts and pieces are an M328. there is another gasser bridge truck here in Concord, at a...
No, I just rent an office here (window to the right at the top of the stair) but you are right great place. He lets me store stuff at the site, plenty of room. All our equipment stays at the jobs we are working on. Water truck is in my yard at home waiting for a spedo cable, new boot on front...
Lowbed driver delivered new truck to the yard today. Went to Maine friday and picked up the truck, new drop side bed and 4 75% 1400x20 radial tires. All the stuff looks great so far. Already changed the oil & filter in the engine with Rotella 15-40 and WIX filter. Look at the pictures an let...
Truck Bed
There is a picture in CSI, Inc. ad in the latest Rock & Dirt that is exactly what I was looking for. The problem is , I am unsure if it was used with the M812A1 trucks or another system. Also the shipping from GA to NH for what I think is a body 11' wide would be very expensive...
Ted's
Emailed Ted @ Ted"s Trucks and his reply was that his beds are not for bridge trucks and as far as he knew, M812A1's only were used for bridges and boats. Anyone know of any other venders?
Thanks
In addition to the question on the steering box shaft seal, what is the correct oil to use in the box itself? My copy of the LO says Hydro oil (10 weight engine oil) in one place and Gear oil in another. It looks like some type of gear oil is in it now but can't tell. Being an actual gear box...
We only have two very small leaks on this truck, so a couple of questions on seals:
1) Can the rear seal on the transmision of a 5 ton be replaced without taking off the retainer plate? In the manual, it looks like you can remove the flange & slinger and remove the seal IF it will come out...
Not trying to beat a dead horse to death, but want to make sure the transfer case in our truck is OK to continue operating.
The operators manual I have talks about being able to tow in reverse IF the sprag is released. To release, it says to jack up one front tire, open the air drain valve and...
Adjustments?
Are there any adjustments for the sprag? Looks like the shifter fork is connected to the piston/cylinder inside the case with no adjustment. The manual I have has no info at all on the transfer case and required adjustments. Could it be that the fork/slider parts of the sprag...
Backing up
It is interesting that this topic came up. While test driving our truck (gasser M139), I stopped at a friend's yard with a steep drive. The gate was locked, and I placed the truck in reverse and rolled back about 50 feet with the clutch in. Then, engaged the clutch to back around...
