Our two "brush fire" M35A2's, one has a 1200-gallon poly tank and the other a 500-gallon poly tank.
If we were to do it over again we would probably have gone 200 gallons less on the truck with the 1200-gallon tank. We only used the 500-gallon tank on our 2nd truck as the tank was given to us...
Firefighter294,
there is a lot of sand down where that fire was, the area that was on fire is right on the Gulf of Mexico, the pictures were taken about 100 yards from the water. People have been building a lot of houses by the water in this area, we have 3 new housing subdivisions being built...
PM me an email and I'll email the hi-res pictures
Ranger is up by Fort Worth, about a 7 hour drive. We are right on the Gulf of Mexico between Houston and Corpus Christi.

Pictures from the big grass fire we responded to last Tuesday 1-27-09.
Over 1200 Acres burned.
Our M35A2 W/W pulled out a 5-ton 6x6 and a 3/4 ton 4x4 Chevy that got stuck.
I've seen pictures on here of deuces with the newer "humvee type" electronic light switches installed in place of the 3 lever manual switch.
Does anyone have info on where to get these?
Thanks
We used to have the fuel in the oil problem on our two current M35A2's we got from the Texas Forest Service.
Our mechanics bypassed the Fuel Density Compensator on both trucks, problem solved.
The 1967 M35A2 we had before our current two M35A2's already had the Compensator bypassed. We also...
tonight our two mechanics changed the fuel timing to "turbo engine timing", thanks for reminding me about it. We have the engine manual with pictures and the settings for all the different engines.
The "D" turbo does not leak oil, so we'll leave it on.
The place that converted our M35A2 Brush fire truck in 2005 made us a somewhat thick steel cab for free, the steel press operator did a good job on the rounded corners, the profile is not military, but it works.
The M35A2 we put in service this year, we just bought a fiberglass cab from Boyce...
We finally put a turbo on our non-turbo 1968 M35W/W. We mainly installed the turbo to cut down on the smoke as we had been getting a lot of complaints.
It took 5 hours, we have a spare engine in our fire station we took the turbo hardware parts off of, including the "D" turbo it had.
Question...
I'm not a mechanic, we're just lucky to have 2 Volunteer Firefighters who are Diesel Mechanics in their "real" job, one of them has a company service truck with an air compressor, air tools, small crane, and just about every tool needed.
I'll take some pictures of the damaged shaft next time I...
Okay,
One of the "keys" came apart, the shaft was messed up, all the gears were good though. Used shaft from "bad" tranny and should have the truck back in service this week.
We discovered the problem with the "bad" tranny was a bad slip ring and a bad 2nd gear. We will be ordering a shaft...
Just finished dropping the tranny out. At first we tried removing the top cover and seeing if anything was wrong, we could push the 2nd & 3rd gears in place, and couldn't see anything broke or worn.
We swapped out the top cover with the cover from our "parts" tanny and it still didn't work in...
I didn't take the pictures, they were copied off some local Newspaper web sites.
Ike was supposed to hit here on the Central Texas gulf Coast where we are, but made a more northern turn at the last minute and made landfall in the Houston/Galveston area instead. Our County did have mandatory...
We had a large grass fire yesterday and 2nd and 3rd gear in our M35A2 W/W stopped working, 1st, 4th, and 5th & Reverse work just fine. We were able to dump the water tank and limp it back to the fire station using the remaining gears and the low/high range.
2 years ago we swapped out the tranny...
The Texas Forest Service gets the trucks from the Federal Government.
They have a 18 wheeler with a flatbed trailer that goes around to different bases picking up trucks for use by the Fire Departments. The special flatbed trailer has a winch and can haul 2 M35 size trucks at a time. The trucks...
I agree that the vent tube needs to be clear. But look at this picture of the old cap, compared to the picture of the new cap in my previous post. Our problem was that the cap was leaking by to the vent tube before the engine was even heated up.
Ours are used for fighting grass fires. We started out with a 1952 GMC M211 in the early 90's, then we got a 1967 M35A2, right now we have two 1968 M35A2's in service.
We like the 6x6's because they can haul more water and go though heavy brush better than the 4x4 pick-up based brush trucks...
One of our M35A2's had a leaky radiator cap. The drain was clear and we ordered a new cap from Boyce that fixed the problem.
The old cap was a different design that had a rubber gasket that only covered the outside rim of the spring loaded thingy, while the new one had a much larger rubber...
