Both of ours are like that.
You have to give it some throttle. It sounds terrible such RPM's on a cold motor.
If you do not keep them running on the first try, the second start is a real struggle.

80's model GM trucks are prone to fuel and brake lines rotting.
You may want to look it over better paying particular attention to the hard lines.
If it is a line they will leak more while running.
At any rate you should plan on replacing the fuel and brake lines while you have the tank down

The one i drove had a 300 Cummins or was it a 250.
It was a top of the line truck in its day.
I like the winged fenders. You pull that latch on the side, Then the whole fender swings out for easy engine access.

Water pump change is just loads of fun.

Could of swore i searched for a chain to check on while i was in there.

The CUCV is a text book striped down work truck.
No power windows / air conditioning / plush carpet / cruise control / Etc................

He says he greased the release bearing. What ever.
Turned out the transmission input shaft must have been twisted.
Made it...
