How to decode your vin number:
1st digit = Nation of Origin
-- 1 = USA
2nd digit = company
-- G = General Motors
3rd digit = division
-- B = Chevrolet, incomplete example contract maintenance trucks
-- C = Chevy Truck
-- 8 = Multipurpose...
There was a thread a while back I cant remember what the title was.
But it spoke of an air leak from the back of the fuel filter houseing.

Basically all I did was remove the 4 bolts...
Ive used sockets on the turbine deck that was driven by an air impact so big that it was moved into place with the ceiling crane and took 3 guys to run it. Now that is a purty big socket.:mrgreen:
I agree with ODdave on tossing the gasket.
To get the pumpkin out i very carfully pryed it out with a small bar.
It will act like it doesnt want to come out but as long as you removed the 4 pillow block bolts , and of course the axle shafts it will come.
To replace the ceals yes you have to remove the pumpkin.
Remove the 4 bolts from the pillow blocks and she should pop out.
As for cleaning i would use WD-40. I wouldnt take the gears apart unless there is evident damage.
