I would like to suggest you look for farmers coops along the way for diesel. They have premium diesel at good prices most of the time.
The flexplate needs to match the engine not the transmission. Internal or external balance of the engine rules here. The flexplate must match the engine.

As I have said before I prefer the sealed u-joints. They are stronger and last a lot better for me. I have never had a problem damaging a cap with hydraulic pressure. Sounds like too much grease in caps possibly like Rich said.
