M939 Series 5 Ton Winterization for Winter Driving? Fairbanks, Alaska Edition...

Wow, thanks for all the replies! Snowtrac Nome, Re: your descriptions of Ft Greely to Fairbanks and the like, at one point my dad and I looked at a house in Big Delta...I considered making that drive to Fairbanks all the time in a Deuce or a 5 ton.

M939 Series 5 Ton Winterization for Winter Driving? Fairbanks, Alaska Edition...

Thanks 74M35A2! Sounds like getting this beast roadworthy for Fairbanks winters isn't as bad as I actually anticipated. Any thoughts if the NHC250 will be any harder to get running at -23? I know some people say the 8.3 is a little easier starting in those conditions. Re: the heater, I'd be...

M939 Series 5 Ton Winterization for Winter Driving? Fairbanks, Alaska Edition...

Interesting idea with the 3 ton jersey barrier! Even -21F isn't bad, that's a good chunk of our winters. I see you're parting out the 928? I sent you a PM on Facebook....

M939 Series 5 Ton Winterization for Winter Driving? Fairbanks, Alaska Edition...

Now that winter is here (not officially per the calendar, but per the snow flying and joking daily about how a good chunk of people in a college town/military hub just moved here and don't know how to drive even their subcompact cars in the snow, I've gotten to really wondering about this, in...

Alaskan camper in our 5 ton "crazy dog"

Looks great! This gave me another idea for what to put in the bed of a 923 I have a line on to move out of the college dorms.

Need to pick someone's brain: Forlorn rotting M275/M48?

I just might this spring. Like I said it's not something I'd keep, but it might be worth saving potentially.

Need to pick someone's brain: Forlorn rotting M275/M48?

Definitely, agreed with you there...or the guy could be misremembering what's in there if it hasn't moved in years.

Need to pick someone's brain: Forlorn rotting M275/M48?

Yeah, I'm not sure what this one is, since I haven't seen the data plates in the cab.

Need to pick someone's brain: Forlorn rotting M275/M48?

I'm thinking kinda leave it, since it's not exactly original, and it's in rough shape to begin with.

Need to pick someone's brain: Forlorn rotting M275/M48?

I did talk to the guy at the time and learned apparently it has a Ford engine and transmission in it, thoughts? Kinda ruins the stock appeal but does that make it anything unique?

    Choosing Between M923A1 and M923A2

Haha! In the year and a half I've lived in Fairbanks, the furthest north I've ever been was Chena Hot Springs, just up the Steese Highway then 56 miles to the east down Chena Hot Springs Rd, and that was when I first visited the area in 2015. I'd love to get up further north though. A former...

M923A1 Allison Hard downshift into 1st

Hey Lindsey97, would changing out the 10wt? that the military uses be something you'd do immediately then if winterizing a M923 for winters in Fairbanks, AK?

    Choosing Between M923A1 and M923A2

The M923"A0" I've ridden in was definitely enough to knock that cup over, as if the G177's on our frost heaved freeways weren't already probably enough.

Yikes. I remember you showing me that picture on one of the Facebook groups.

M923A1 Allison Hard downshift into 1st

Definitely curious to hear results from anybody's full Dextron flush (I've read you have to completely flush it, not just drain and refill when changing fluid types). I've ridden shotgun in a 923 that definitely had the hard downshift in that pulling-up-to-a-stop-sign kind of deceleration, very...

    Tires. 14.00s vs 16.00s

That is a fine looking truck. If I didn't have a line on a 923 I'd definitely consider such a setup, short wheel base that actually (almost) fits in one parking space, and will go crazy places off-road.
