I don't know if there's any "proper" ettiquite regarding putting on numbers, but that sounds like a logical thing to do.
I should've been authorized to wear a certain "airborne" units' patch, since my unit was OPCON'd directly to them for most of the deployment and did a lot of their dirty...
While it's your truck and you can do what you want with it, my feeling is that if you served with a unit you have EARNED THE RIGHT to display those unit numbers. Without the individuals who make up the unit, it's just numbers. I don't have a problem with someone putting any unit numbers on a...
VFF19, I wasn't referring to your truck specifically, just the fact that he thinks a homebrew truck is better any day than a purpose built truck. Some people need to not just live in their little world. MV's in a hobby and for real work are two different animals. There's a lot of different...
Just because someone's a firefighter doesn't mean they are qualified to build a firetruck. I don't think there's many pilots that coudl design an airplane. While they may have insight into which features are useful and which are not, it doesn't qualify them to engineer the vehicle.
And the...
Please don't take my response as "fighting", what I'm putting out is VERY important info IMHO. We had a Humvee that we turned back into DRMO (or whoever we got it from) in '09, and some other dept got without updating anything. They didn't have it for even a year and a young newboy got killed...
I did have a situation with a gas engine once. I was plowing with my '45 Farmall M at full throttle, and all of a sudden the engine started to race way higher than it had ever run before. I quickly hit the ignition switch and it stopped. Luckily I reacted quickly and no damage was done. I...
What's with all the NFPA BS? Gee I dunno, maybe all the NIOSH LODD (Line Of Duty Death) reports about firefighters getting KILLED in surplus MV's.
Yes, as cool as they look and as fun as they are to drive, THEY ABSOLUTELY CAN AND WILL KILL YOU IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THEIR LIMITATIONS ARE...
You gotta edjamacate 'em. Next time you do some training fires invite them to participate. There are some programs out there to do that, you can probably do a search on how others do it. I think our county Vocational school that has a fire service program does this. If you put this on...
What kind of pump is used in that pump? (diaphram, vane, etc.) It may not be designed to pump unfiltered water, or water at all. I'd do some research on it. You may find that you will have to clean the pump out after every use. I'd double check on you intended use before permanent damage is...
There's NO WAY that a non-turbo engine has more power than the same engine with a turbo unless something is wrong with the turbo'd engine. A turbo is an upgrade in power. That's why they add turbo's, to get more power out of the same block. It crams more air into the cylinder, and should be...
If need to drop the TC out maybe this will work, it's how I dropped the hyd. pump out of my tractor. If you can find some heavy angle (you'll need 2 pieces) that will fit across the frame above the TC, you can drill holes in it on either side for some 3/8" threaded rod. Use a bar or some pipe...
Plym, as for tools, you don't need a lot of exotic tools. A good 8-12 ton bottle jack will get your wheels in the air with no problem. A pair of at least 6 ton jack stands will keep them there. You can get a Harbor Freight 3/4" drive socket set for not much $, and it should do most of the...
Winning is not the problem. We still get rear-ended by morons even though we have big fire apparatus with flashing LED's (They're so bright I can see the reflection off of street signs on a sunny day) and big red and lime yellow reflective chevrons on the back. You still have to watch out for...
If the deuce is sitting on a good concrete slab, it should be fine barring a tornado. On asphalt they would probably sink a little and leave permanent divots. You could use a plywood pad and that would prevent damage to the asphalt. I'd make a pad from two sheets of 3/4" CDX (treated plywood...
As was said, you'll have the thickness issue as well as the fact that cedar is soft. It won't take much punishment and will scratch and get marked up pretty easily. While expensive, something like Trex (composite wood/plastic) might be good. It's VERY durable, and you can get it with wood grain.
VFF, my response had nothing to do with you fire fighting, keep that up by all means. It's hard to get good firefighters. But just as you wear turnouts and SCBA to protect you in a fire, protect yourself from liability as well. I ASSURE YOU, IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT, LAWYERS WILL FIND SOMEONE...
