- Your 1" boards of pine are likely only 3/4" thick, but
- Your typical !' oak board will be a full 1" (something known as 5/4 stock).

Likely white pine that you got there, and for interior conditions that stuff is plenty fine.
But white pine is a relatively "soft" wood (fast growing), and just doesn't hold up real well outdoors. But you can stain it, and that will help it last a little longer than usual.

Is that the idea behind "high build" primer; it's more than a few mils thick and so bridges a lot of rough spots in the surface; kind of a self-leveler?
