9mpg is what to expect out of an 8.3. 5mpg is what to expect out of an NH250. This doesn't fit my definition of "more than double" although it is substantial.
I've had multiple examples of both motors. I don't have a strong preference either way. I'll take a nice truck with a winch and an NH250...
I'm talking about difference in value of an auction truck in decent condition with hardtop vs without hardtop. Are you going to pay $3k more for a truck because it has a hardtop?
I bought a hardtop recently in nearly NOS condition for $400.
Here's a somewhat comparable truck at auction. $10,100 final bid means more like $12,300 at invoice. And you still have to retrieve it.
74M35A2's truck has the winch which adds $1500-2000. A private sale truck also gives you the ability to test drive it and look it over in much more detail...
74M35A2's truck has all the desirable features and is nicely repainted.
Assigning value simply based on what I see bere would put the lower end of a screaming deal somewhere around $10,500 (and similar trucks have brought more than this at auction) to a realistic value somewhere more like...
I get 5mpg with the nh250 even towing another 939series.
7-12mpg out of various A2's in varying circumstances.
More power right off the line with the nh250, and they shift better.
8.3 pulls hills considerably better, and tows heavy loads better. Example - M923A2 towed a 16,000lb mk16...
It should work.
There's yet a simpler solution though - make a fuel cap with a Schrader valve and just pressurize it from your glad hand when needed. $2 in parts and some time....
I'm not sure what the diameter of the brush guard pin is, but it isn't designed as a tow point. I wouldn't do it.
We've got a bunch of people in the OKC area. I suggest finding someone with a set of medium towbars and the correct feet and borrowing them. Of course that brings up the issue of...
Evidence suggests . . . Clearly they both turn. Just as clearly they don't turn at the same rate. Some thought would make it obvious that if the didn't both turn that it would result in serious sideways force on the 2nd set, and that if they turned at the same rate that would also produce...
I did the research once upon a time and found a good replacement for something like $125 including mounting hardware.
DocPA did this replacement recently so he may be able to direct you.
