    Rattle on steady state driving

I honestly don’t think they teach anything about driveshaft phasing in 91B school, there is no other explanation for SO MANY trucks coming out of DRMO with the driveshafts installed wrong. It takes 5 extra seconds to insert the spline properly.

    Rattle on steady state driving

Driveshaft phasing is good, although can't be sure of proper of proper balancing.

    Rattle on steady state driving

Hub gears make noise when they are not set up right. Check those and check your driveshaft phasing too.

Did I just buy a 2023 LMTV M1078A1 or not?

Looks OK for the most part, only red flag I see is the dash is pulled, might be the start of some troubleshooting, or, if you are lucky, some cannibalization. Check your driveshaft phasing.

Strange sound coming from rear end

I first put this truck on the road a few weeks ago & have only gone on very short trips. This happened rather suddenly & coincidentally occurred right after I changed diff oil and greased up the U-joints. I’ve worked in a variety of vehicles over the years and am pretty mechanically inclined -...

    Heading to the East Coast

I will pull the driveshafts when I get to Charleston and have them balanced. I had read about them causing expensive damage. Thanks for the reminder.

    Heading to the East Coast

Those starters are as heavy as what is on a 5ton 809/939. They use small m10 bolts to hold it on. Those are equal to 3/8 compared to the nhc250s use three 5/8" bolts

    Heading to the East Coast

...Now, I don't know a great deal about the FMTVs, but I have noticed traffic about them having a vibration issue. Something about driveshaft phasing, I believe. I would recommend some research on it, if you aren't aware already. If it were me, and it's already rattled a starter off, I would...

    Question about Rebuilt(?) TH-400

Google Indexing/phasing Driveshaft's there will be pictures of the right way. You want them to be opposite so each one compliments the other turning and not binding. Make sure all the u/joints are seated the same.

Interesting explanation of importance of driveshaft phasing

This part doesn't make sense. Maybe you misunderstood him? That is exactly why the phasing is so critical, and 180° is the worst case. Even if it hadn't been balanced, it could easily be mostly in balance assembled correctly, and terribly out of balance 180° out of phase. Think about it...

Interesting explanation of importance of driveshaft phasing

On FMTVs the slip joint spines are so course that you can eyeball the driveshaft and tell if it’s off.

    Coasting Noise?

...tone whirring noise that happens to me about the same speed. Sometimes under light gas , sometimes coasting. The noise goes away like after 4 seconds :), and does not happen only ocasionally. I kind of dismissed it as not critical, but should I be also looking into the driveshaft phasing?

    Coasting Noise?

You have confused driveshaft phasing and driveshaft hinge test.

    Coasting Noise?

...knowing how to set up the wheel end spiders is ZERO. The trained Army mechanics for the most part don't know how. Most shops don't even understand driveshaft phasing. My advise to you is find the threads on Steelsoldiers that explain these tasks and educate your mechs before they make a mess.

Check your driveshaft phasing and the set up in the spider gears in your wheel end hubs.
