Press size for Hypoid/Spur Gear removal 2.5 ton differential??

Thanks Davo, I knew about the plates being junk, I use a 1-1/2" thick steel plate. A 6" piece of 1/4 wall pipe worked good for supporting the diff. Plenty of room for the gear to pass through. And just for reference, the spur gear just passes through the bed of the press, I had to rotate it a...

Press size for Hypoid/Spur Gear removal 2.5 ton differential??

Updating this: I ended up with a 20 ton HF press, been wanting one anyway. It did the job but it took some good pressure to get it started. Once it "popped" it was easy going. I stood off to the side and good thing as it turns out the bearing race blew apart. Must not of been seated correctly .

I have a friend with a 20 ton that's not far, I just have doubts about it but it is worth a shot. I'll report back.

Press size for Hypoid/Spur Gear removal 2.5 ton differential??

Going through a couple of spare differentials and need to press out the spur gear/hypoid gear. The manual simply states to "put it into press". Anyone know the actual tonnage required to press this out? When I do buy a press, I want to be sure I can do this in the future. Pic below shows where...

Axle wrap with a bobbed deuce?

This^^^ When doing the shackle mount at the frame, the traction bar should mount to the top of the shackle. As the axle torques, it wants to rotate the pinion/driveshaft upward. You can run bushings at the axle end and frame side of the shackle, and run a single rod end on the traction bar. This...

I will call him for sure before the trip, thank you for his number! I'm definitely not the "American Picker" type, and I have a ton of respect for guys like him who know what they have and what its worth to them. If it all works out, I will report back with pics.

    Would you wear these shoes?

There's two places I never skimp on, brakes and steering. Good thing your doing a 100% overhaul. I'm sure the feeling of having proper working brakes far outweighs the cost in the long run for yah.[thumbzup]

Thank you Ryan, I will look into it some more on line and see if I can find a site. I just saw that one side was longer on a spec page and got curious. I think your right with your answers. The torsion bar layout makes complete sense. I didnt even think of that. The pins are a dry type...

Thanks Chris, we found a couple of drawings on-line that helped. For the more detailed measurments we needed, I ended up going to Littlefields and took the rest of the measurements of his. Very nice of him to do so. Im in the process of drawing up some detailed drawings now with measurements...

Thanks lacoda56, all steel is 3/8's plate so far. No.2Diesel, You werent kidding about 20 questions! The armor is pretty close on the actual thickness. Armor on these were 6-12.5 mm. So for us here in the states, 1/4 to 1/2 inch will work. Tatra and Praga are the Czech version...
