Cummins NHC 250 versus Cummins 6CTA8.3

yes, the M920 has a Cummins Big Cam tied to a Cat 16 speed. I also have a 1970 XM818 with the NHC250, so I know what to expect from that motor and 5-speed tranny. It seems like, based on what Wes said, a solid M816 might be good for me since I tend to push the limits on the hydraulics and have...

Thanks! I have definitely passed up on some that appeared to be in rough shape.

Cummins NHC 250 versus Cummins 6CTA8.3

Mostly flatlands and some rolling hills where it would be used on road. Off-road, terrain will vary quite a bit

Cummins NHC 250 versus Cummins 6CTA8.3

Thanks guys! I would mostly use it on my farm building structures, moving timber and boulders, and helping repair machines and trucks. It would get driven on the highway a few times, and occasionally, if needed, to recover a truck or machine to bring back home to repair, but I also have an...

Cummins NHC 250 versus Cummins 6CTA8.3

I am looking at some M936 wreckers. Is it worth it to spend a few thousand more to get a M936A2 with a Cummins 6CTA8.3 504 cubic inches (8.3 L) turbocharged inline 6 cylinder diesel engine? Would I notice a big difference on the highway? Any reason(s) to avoid the NHC 250 in comparison...

    M920 - will this starter work: Delco Remy 8200287 39MT 12V

Thanks John. My current starter is 24v and current alternator has 12v and 24v feeds. Once I pull the starter and test it, I will decide if I rebuild, replace its solenoid, or go 12v on a new one.

    M920 - will this starter work: Delco Remy 8200287 39MT 12V

I am considering switching over to a 12V system in my 1980 M920 since I do not have any 24v trailers and may need a new starter and alternator. Will this starter work: Delco Remy 8200287 39MT 12V ? I saw some older posts where people have converted to 12V in the M920. I have asked about...

M920 - starter spins but does not engage upon connecting batteries

I will test out the starter solenoid, the starter, the alternator, the starter relay and the ignition switch. I will rebuild, replace, repair as needed. Thanks NDT!

M920 - starter spins but does not engage upon connecting batteries

I did check them and just checked them again. Followed them back to the starter and starter solenoid: The Main Positive cable at the battery bank runs to the starter solenoid The main Negative cable from the battery bank traces back to the starter

M920 - starter spins but does not engage upon connecting batteries

And, the spark at the battery was when engaging the main heavy gauge Positive terminal that runs from the starter solenoid, without ever connecting the main Negative cable that comes from the starter. When I disconnect the 12v Positive feed but still wire up the rear battery bank for 24V...

M920 - starter spins but does not engage upon connecting batteries

Thanks NDT! There was a huge spark at the battery while connecting. The compressor must have stayed running the previous time since the engine actually started that time. This last time it was only the starter with sparks at the battery.

M920 - starter spins but does not engage upon connecting batteries

...long post...lots of details...50 yr old rookie here... As I was connecting the batteries on my M920 today, it sounded like the starter began spinning even though the ignition was off and the key was not even in the truck. It was only spinning and not engaging. It was a constant humming...

    M920 - manual tachometer needed

Is there a manual tachometer that operates based on the spinning of the internal portion of its cable and requires NO 12v or 24v power source? 1980 M920 Cummins NTC400 - speedo/tacho not working; truck starts and runs for 20 seconds then quits. Would be interested to the know the RPMs at all...
